Saylin's Story

My passion is helping animals.

I discovered this passion during my childhood. I remember receiving my first dog JV, at the age of eight. One day, JV would not eat and simply laid on the floor for the entire day. A few days, I was told that JV was diagnosed with diabetes. It broke my heart to hear that he was suffering. Twice a day he was injected with insulin, and the more he was injected, the worse he got. I didn't have a choice but to let him go. This experience motivated me to learn more about animals and try to help them the best way that I can.

Attending the Centenary Summer Scholars: Veterinary Science will help me explore my passion by informing me about animals and their health. Attending the program will allow me to prepare for my future and meet different kinds of people. Being a veterinarian is my dream, and I will not stop until I reach it.

A Note from Ms. Farrell, Saylin's Teacher

"Saylin consistently discusses her passion for veterinary medicine. Needless to say, in the Bronx there are limited opportunities to pursue this passion as many people do not have pets. Despite this, Saylin is incredibly forward-thinking and took AP Chemistry with the intent of becoming a veterinarian. Saylin has taken the initiative to research what is required to become a veterinarian and put herself on track to meet these goals.

Saylin is one of the most responsible individuals whom I have ever taught. She genuinely enjoys learning and pursuing things to better herself. Given these important character traits, Saylin will get the most out of this program because she is ready to apply her to a professional setting where she can learn more about veterinary medicine."
