Misbah's Story

My passion is words.

Writing wasn’t always my passion, it was just something I’ve always done and been told I was outstanding in. Lately, I feel like my passion of writing has been dwindling because there was always that fear of your work not coming out as beautifully as you pictured it in your head. Vulnerability, most especially in writing, is emotional risk, exposure, uncertainty. It’s what fuels our daily lives. That’s why now I reek my passion: poetry and prose, words.

I want to be an activator, someone who uses their passion and tools to help others. By attending the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program, I feel that my passion for writing will continue to unfold and mold into its own stories. While I am still struggling to find my voice through writing, I am also struggling to become a brown independent Muslim femme because it is difficult to unlearn society's ridiculous expectations. It’s difficult to be completely unapologetically me. If I cannot be completely myself, how will I help others know themselves and help them find their own testimony? I feel that the Journalism Program will help me mesh together my passion for writing an my social justice work by providing the tools to enhance my voice, sharpen my public speaking skills, and expanding my networks.

A Note from Ms. Thomas, Misbah's Mentor

"Misbah is a talented writer, but what separates her from the other candidates is the way she uses her writing talent to pursue her passion for social justice, often in courageous defiance of her parents' restrictions. A born interviewer and a voracious consumer of the news, she has an extraordinary talent for putting people at ease and getting them to open up about their lives. She has a keen sense of what's right, what's wrong, and what the world needs to be told. Misbah deserves to participate in the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program, where she will gratefully seize the rare opportunity to spread her wings and follow her dream."

Thank you PSJP

The Princeton Summer Journalism Program was a 10-day intensive that allowed low-income students from all around the States come forward to work on a final Summer Journal newspaper about the most top current news: expired products at Jersey drug stores, Governor Chris Christie, feminism, and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. I got to network with different speakers at workshops all week, interview people on the street about Donald Trump, and report back to our newspaper team meetings for down time. The program solidified one thing for me, and that is that I would like to pursue a career in journalism.

Cant wait for Princeton University Summer Journalism Program

I love being part of the Wishbone community because I'm able to expand my networks, connect with different individuals from all walks of life, and make my brain throb from learning so many new things. I would be open-minded and caring, bringing my energy to the group. I feel that being a part of this community will make me a more understanding and lively person. Being a part of Wishbone is a wish come true, no pun intended. This opportunity is invaluable to me.
