Samaine's Story

My passion is connecting with other people.

For a very long time now, I've known that I want to be a therapist. I remember being twelve years old and sitting in the guidance counselor's office discussing a personal issue. What I remember most is not the conversation that we had, but the warm feeling I had inside. It was a feeling of compassion and love. The feeling stemmed from the simple fact that I knew the lady sitting directly across from me understood what I was feeling. Over the past few years, my passion for connecting with people intensified. I like the idea of stepping in to the shoes of other people in order to get a better sense of what they go through.

Blueprint Summer at Lehigh University is an amazing opportunity for me. This program offers a variety of different courses that are aligned with my passion for building connections and forming relationship with other people. This program offers rigorous courses, some of which are centered around psychology and acting. Acting is a great pathway into the art of therapy. Acting allows performers to step out of their minds and enter the mind of another character. It also allows performers to develop a different point of view based off of different experiences. This is a skill that therapists have to use every day. Additionally, the psychology coursework will help me gain an understanding of the human mind--another crucial skill that therapists must have.

A Note from Ms. Burke, Samaine's Teacher

"In our second theater course, many students struggle with grasping the complex concepts, which ask students to go from simply memorizing scripts to rehearsing using real acting techniques. Samaine also struggled at first, but she did not let it stop her. She asked detailed questions, took great notes, and worked with her peers to improve. During the final part of the project, she served as a coach for one of her classmates. His performance was stellar, and I was extremely proud of her efforts."
