Lesly's Story

My passion is psychology.

When I was younger, my mom suffered a back injury while working at the New Yorker Hotel. I gave her advice and told her that she had to take time for herself and make herself feel better. From that day forward, I knew that I wanted to be a psychologist. If I, as a nine year old, could give my 34-year-old mother life advice and help her change her habits for the better, then I can grow up to change other people’s lives too.

Attending Summer@Brown would allow me to explore psychology. I really love learning about how the mind works and how different illnesses can affect interactions with other people and even one's self. I'll also be able to experience a college environment, which will help prepare me for when I attend college. Brown’s prestigious background and extensive research program sets Summer@Brown aside from all other summer psychology programs.

A Note from Mr. O'Brien, Lesly's Teacher

"Lesly is a stellar student, and she is ready for a life changing experience like the Summer@Brown program. She is prepared to meet students from a range of backgrounds, spend time on a world class institution, and learn about world issues in a new context. Lesly's application to Brown's program makes so much sense as she has sought out the most academically challenging trajectory at our school and she is looking for an even more robust opportunity to learn about the world around us."

Thank you for a life changing summer

This summer couldn't have been better. My week at Brown was something exceptional. I got to explore so much in psychology of resilience. It opened my mind and has assured me that I want to have a stable future in psychology. This summer I got to meet so many people that had an interest in learning. It felt so good to finally be in an environment full of people that were like me. Additionally, I got to meet so many people from so many different places and backgrounds. My roommate was from England! She had so many different experiences that I had never experienced, and it was just so fascinating.

It was amazing to be able to explore the amazing campus with new friends that I will always have a bond with. Getting up at 10 am everyday and heading to breakfast with my classmate and going to lunch after our three hour class became a routine. After that, going to do homework and having so much spare time after to myself. At night, my new friends and I would go to the main green on campus and get to meet even more new people and get to know more about the friends I had already made. It was so exciting to have this freedom and stay out 3 minutes before curfew to run to my house and check in with my RA right at 10:58 pm. I memorized all of the buildings with air conditioning to hide from the crazy heat.

If it weren't for the donations I received from wonderful supportive people like you, I would have never had the best week of my life. This will forever stay with me, and I will forever be thankful for the faith you all had me. Thank you.

My Summer at Brown

I am now fully funded! I'm super grateful for all these generous donations. It feels extremely heart warming to know that so many people have decided to take time to read my campaign and donate to me. I hope to have one of the best and most life changing summers being at Brown, and it is all because of your generosity. This program will truly show me a clearer path to my future, being an upcoming junior. I'm both nervous and excited to be in a new environment. I'm also scared of missing home for that week, but on the other hand, I want to feel a college like freedom before I actually get there. Hopefully, I will meet people that have the same passion and/or determination as me. I'll soon start buying all of my necessities for my week there, and most likely pack earlier than necessary! Thank you all so much once again for helping me get to this marvelous summer coming my way.
