Matthew's Story

My passion is mathematics.

Math was something that was always in my mind. Growing up, I was really good at math. However, in 6th grade, I didn’t want to be different from everyone else, so I lowered my grade. I wouldn’t turn in assignments or projects, but when it came to tests I always did my best. I didn’t think my teacher would say anything to me until she came up to me and asked me, “What was going on?’’ I couldn’t find a way to tell her. She told me it’s ok to be different and that I shouldn’t stoop down to what other people think I should be at. She told me to rise and go beyond what people think of you.

Attending Cal Poly EPIC Engineering Camp will help me pursue my passion because it will help grow my math world. In middle school, I won critical thinking awards for Math, Social Studies, and English. I want to know why things are the way they are, who made it this way. Attending this program will help me to understand what's in between the numbers of each equation.

Matthew is a student who seeks academic rigor, and Cal Poly EPIC Engineering Camp seems like just what he needs to take his engagement with math to the next level. He is a very responsible student who manages his time well, tracks his assignments, and communicates with teachers about both academic and emotional needs. He thinks creatively in his school work and enjoys learning new math concepts. He prefers to go deep into a subject, which is another strength of Cal Poly EPIC Engineering Camp. I think that Matthew is a perfect fit for this program.
