Shantel's Story

My passion is forensic science.

Ever since I was little, I would help my mom out with my siblings and around the house. Even when my siblings got a small cut, I would try my best to take care of it. When I was around eleven years old ,I thought that I wanted to be a pediatrician. But my passion changed as I explored the requirements to become a doctor, and the amount of time that it would take to finish medical school. I want to be working as soon I finish college. Around sixth grade, my interest fell upon forensic science and I wanted to become a medical examiner. To help someone find closure for someone that they loved, seems like the perfect job to me.

Attending Ithaca: American Gangster will help me explore my passion to become a medical examiner and helping people out. I want to explore past behaviors of criminals that have done terrible things in America's history. I have learned some criminals and serial killers would copy the same way a victim was hurt or killed by a past criminal or serial killer that they idolize.

A Note from Ms. Monfre, Shantel's Teacher

Shantel exudes passion for forensic science. One day I mentioned that I was watching a TV show "I, Zombie" and Shantel lit up and described her passion for forensic science. I was astounded. At that moment, I realized that Shantel's passion may not have been for Greek literature, but instead it was investigating crimes in hopes of bringing closure to families. She reminded me of a young girl who came alive when she read Nancy Drew novels. Thankfully that young girl (me) found a passion to move her from the reality she faced (small town poverty) to find her new reality (higher education).

For Shantel, studying forensic science gives her a purpose and a reason to study, a reason to come to school and find her own reality, one that will take her from Brooklyn to her dreams of college and beyond. When I see Shantel's face light up as we discuss forensic science, I am reminded that our reality is only as limiting as our dreams are.
