Jenna's Story

My passion is dance.

I first became interested in dance around the age of two. On Saturdays, my mother would put me in dance classes in order to run errands and find a way for me to make friends. Dance was more or less a hobby--until I saw the teen division working on choreography for the spring recital. Very interested, I sat in the back of the room and watched carefully. After paying very close attention to the counts, I danced along in perfect coronation with the older girls. Amazed at my moves, he asked if I wanted to do a number with the older girls. Later in June, the instructor introduced me to a friend from a dance school in Los Angeles who gave me a ticket to come and participate in a dance convention happening in Manhattan. Ever since that day, I discovered that dance was more than a hobby, it was my life.

Attending SOCAPA Summer Dance Camp would allow me to learn from the best of the best and improve on overall technique . Attending the program will open doors for myself because I will train with top notch instructors who have connections in the industry.

A Note from Ms. Sears, Jenna's Counselor

"In the past year, I've had the opportunity to work closely with Jenna through her participation in our school's Dance Ensemble. She is truly a joy to have in dance classes. She is always on time and ready to move! She is consistently engaged and can pick up movement easily.

Jenna is a great candidate for SOCAPA Summer Dance Camp. She is a young lady who is driven and has the capacity to grow even more as a dancer. She would be like a sponge absorbing as much as she can from her teachers and even serving as a motivator for her peers."

A Summer to Never Forget At SOCAPA

This summer was a summer experience that I would never forget. At the SOCAPA Dance camp, I learned much more than I anticipated in my two weeks attending. My first two days of camp were tough: the instructors evaluated our skills the same way that a casting director would audition dancers and the cardio was INTENSE. I had to learn four different types of choreography in those two days and master them with the little time I was given. After the Assessment Days, I was assigned to a teacher and a dance style. Within my first week, I had leaned choreography that we would later perform in a dance video. Along with making a dance music video, we also split up into groups to create student-choreographed pieces that would be performed at the two week showcase. For the music video, I danced to "Lean On" by Major Lazer and for the student pieces we danced to a master mix of "Jet Blue" by Major Lazer and "I'm Madonna" by Madonna and Nicki Minaj. On top of all these exciting experiences, I also had the chance to take a lot more classes that were out of my comfort zone, like a musical theater class and a Latin jazz class. With this experience I also made some AMAZING new friends who are from outside of the U.S.A. All in all, I gained so and really enjoyed my time there. I also miss some of the AMAZING people that I met and hope to see them again. SOCAPA was and still is the highlight of my summer. I can't wait to use what I have learned .

BEST SUMMER EVER !!!!!!!!!!

Excited for SOCAPA Summer Dance Program!

I would like to thank you for opening doors and allowing me to attend SOCAPA Summer Dance Program ! I am truly grateful and appreciate the support. My dream is to one day own a dance company or studio of some sort in Brooklyn so that kids of all ages who are interested in dance will be open to the opportunity without placing a financial burden on parents or forcing them to travel far distances for a well-rounded dance education. I believe that this program will be the first step on the path of my dream. Thank you all so much for this fabulous opportunity and for your support and donations; I would not be able to take these steps without your donations.
