My passion is sociology and psychology.
I discovered these passions when watching the news or hearing about severe killings, and I would wonder what drove them to do these things. Also as a child, I was always the one to ask why people acted the way they do, and I always wanted to get into people's minds to see what they are thinking and feeling. My mother and many other people told me that psychology was a field that I should work in because then I could research more and get the answers that I want. I could even help people who have mental problems or just problems in general. My interest in why people act the way they do extends to a societal level as well, which is why I'm also interested in sociology. I want to learn about how people's environment or upbringing causes problems in society.
In 2018, I will be the first young woman in my family to graduate high school and the first to be enrolled in and on the way to attending an university. Attending Ithaca: American Gangster will help me explore my passions because it would be a step towards what I will be doing when I get older. Also, the program will give me practice in analyzing the thoughts inside of people's heads, like inside the mind of a criminal. I would get a deeper understanding of how environment, upbringing, race, and class, impact people's actions, including joining gangs. This could help me because those four factors are some things that trigger actions by people and I want to analyze that on a deeper level.
If I could describe Shiniece in a few words they would be: hardworking, generous, enthusiastic, determined, and full of wonder. It is amazing to see how one person can embody all of these great characteristics. The day I met Shiniece was her first day of high school, and she was a student that stood out to the entire staff on that first day. Her generous personality follows her where ever she goes. She is polite and is a leader amongst her peers. She is not afraid to participate in a large crowd and speaks with such fluidity and strong voice. Her enthusiasm is felt the minute you see her smile and her eagerness for more knowledge.
Shiniece works hard each day she comes to school. When she cannot understand a concept or new material, she is not one to give up. She takes it in, thinks, asks questions, goes back to work and tries again. She is determined to solve the problem or understand the concept at hand. Her dedication is admirable and it is reflective in her grades. Shiniece dreams of going to college and becoming the first woman in her family to graduate from college. This is her drive and her reason to succeed in anything she sets her heart to.
Thank you everyone who gave money to my campaign and helped me attend this lovely program. I learned so much there about racial stereotypes and the characteristics of many gangs and mobs that have been around since the late 1800s. Also I've experienced real college life and staying up doing homework, washing clothes, eating in the halls, going different places, watching plays, and going out to eat. I did so many things and I'm so grateful to everyone who gave money to me. If it wasn't for you guys this experience would have never been possible.
Thank you to everyone who gave money to allow me to attend this program. I'm so excited to go to Ithaca college, experience college life and live on campus. I'm nervous about meeting new people but excited at the same time. Hopefully I make friends! I can't wait to learn new things . I can't wait to learn about all the mobs and gangs and the causes behind them. Thank you again everyone.
Thank you, to everyone who has donated to me in my journey to attend Ithaca College American Gangster. I'm so excited to attend this program because it's my first hands on exposure to sociology and learning how the environment affects criminals. I'm interested in learning how what they think in their heads causes them to do the things that they do. This experience is going to be life changing and my best summer so far of my years living at Ithaca college. Thanks again!
I am so proud of you Shiny Mo! Keep up the great work!
