Carlos's Story

My passion is cars, computers, and robots.

This became my passion when I learned that they have many things in common because they all require a lot of thinking. What I like about these things is that you get to use special tools and you have to memorize the keys that you made in order for your project work. I enjoy problem solving and doing this kind of thinking.

I will develop my passion at Computer Camp because I want to learn how to build things such as cars and robots with a computer. This type of program interests me the most because I think that it will test out the skills that I need to be an engineer. I don't know much about computers right now, but I really want to learn more.

A Note from Ms. Parise, Carlos's Teacher

"Carlos is a good candidate for Computer Camp because he is someone who is very interested in engineering and computers but has not had much exposure to exploring these interests. This opportunity will make him better prepared for college. His family would not be able to afford a program like this, so it is important for him to take advantage of opportunities like this.

Carlos is a student who follows through on any commitment he takes on and will not let anyone down. He is willing to work hard and also ask for help when he needs it. He is an exceptional young man, and I hope that he'll be able to attend this program."

The Experience of Being on Stanford Campus

I have had the best experience on Stanford campus. Everything was great during the week that I was attending my program. The experience was so good that I wanted to stay for another week. Being at Stanford made me think about what a university should look like, so that I could fit in on their campus. I also thought about what major I want to study when I get into a university. This program also made me step out of my comfort zone, because meeting new made me feel uncomfortable. However, when I was at Stanford everything was different. I felt more confidence to talk to other who I didn’t know. I met other peers who were like me very friendly. They built a place that I was comfortable being in. Teachers also made a comfortable place where everybody was able to communicate with each other. It was very nice to be at Stanford University, because you feel you freedom without really worrying about anything other than learning.

Excited to Attend Computer Camp

I first learned about the Computer Camp hosted by Education Unlimited through another program I participate in called SEO Scholars. SEO Scholars is an academic college preparatory program. I chose the Computer Camp because I am interested in pursuing a career that has involvement with computers. I want to check out which career path I want to explore in my future college courses since I am not exactly sure which career I want to have after college graduation. I am looking for a great experience meeting other teenagers with similar interests. I'm also looking forward to learning new computer programs, coding language, and having new opportunities.

I live in San Francisco where there is a rise in jobs in the technology industry and there are many new technology companies being created every day. I think that having skills in computer programming will help me be a competitive candidate for college applications and future job applications. If I decide to pursue a career in computer science, I would be the first in my family to graduate college with a degree and to pursue a career in the technology industry. I am really looking forward to this opportunity to be able to develop new skills in a field that I do not know much about yet. Thank you for this opportunity. I know that I will learn a lot and after Computer Camp, I will hopefully be decided about my future career.
