Janiqua's Story

My passion is law.

One of the reasons why I want to be a lawyer is because I want to help people. I feel that being in the field of law would give me the necessary background and skills to reach out to people who need help. I also really enjoy reading, writing, and analysis. I am an organized person, and I like structure and order as well. I also enjoy the study of law and learning about how an argument could be made on both sides of any case. Law can allow me to constantly grow and learn.

UConn Pre-College Summer Program will help me pursue my passion for law because I will be able to learn and explore many different opportunities and get to meet new people who have the interest as me. I will get an inside scope on the college itself and have a real life experience learning something more in depth. I would like to have a great experience on a college campus so I could make this summer something that I will always remember.

A Note from Mr. Vamvakides, Janiqua's Teacher

Janiqua is very passionate and hungry to achieve her goals. She has tried so hard to overcome the many obstacles in her life to bring up her grades so that one day she will be able to attend law school.

Janiqua will benefit from UConn Pre-College Summer Program by getting out of her environment and seeing what the world has to offer. She will benefit from being around like minded, driven young people.

The BEST experience ever..

This was the best experience I ever had. The Uconn Pre Summer Program gave me a lot of love and support and made me feel like home. My Sociology: Social Justice class was learning about religion, race, gender, etc and how it could effect society in the past or today. We spend some time in class from 9-12 and some days mostly all day talking about articles from bell hooks and others readings and gave our point of views as a discussion about what we have read. I was fascinated by the idea that we came into a group every single day when it's only 9 of us including the professor sharing thoughts and ideas which made me think more and ask more questions and learn off of other people. We watched a film of Dawnland which was about the native americans who were forced out of their homes when they were kids to be put into a white family and these families spoke upon what was going on and how they felt about it. This film will soon be on air. We was lucky to see it before it been released. But relating to that, I went to the Pequot Museum. We got the inside scoop behind the Indian (Native Americans) tribe and how they culture different from ours in a way. We got a tour, ate lunch with the people who work there also had a talk about the treaty of Hartford to show us how it really was a effect to their culture. This was through 8am-4pm. It was very long but I learned extremely a lot. This opportunity had taught me a lot in connections to my other program and by taking this experience I had found my major, that I would major in going into college in the fall of 2019. Thank you for helping me making this summer the best summer I will never forget.

Thank You!

To all of my donors, I want to thank you for posting your donations for giving me the opportunity to go to this amazing program. As of May 7th, 2018, I have been fully funded for my program, and I'm on my way to spending a week at UConn Pre-College Summer Program in July. Your donations and support will absolutely not go to waste. I will make the most of every opportunity I am given and make sure that this program will be something to always remember. If not for your love, support and donations, I would not be able to go to this program this summer. So while you are congratulating me, congratulate yourselves on putting another student on the path to a 4 year university and a chance to become the next lawyer in the future.
