My passion is music.
I started playing instruments in 6th grade. Since the first time, I loved the feeling of playing my instrument and making melodies. I loved playing but I wasn't very good. I started practicing every day, staying after school and asking my teacher if could take the instrument home since I didn't have my own personal instrument. At the time, I only played clarinet but I put so much work into it that when the time came to play the shows I had nothing to worry about.
Litchfield Jazz Camp is definitely a camp that will help me explore my passion for music because my goal is to improve in any way I can. Litchfield is a performing arts program that in the process of performing, you get to learn many things about music and in the end that is what I want. I want to improve musically and have a good time with the staff and students there. I am willing to put as much as I can into practicing and learning what Litchfield has to offer.
Steven is one of the first to arrive in the music room each morning, and returns after school to practice. He plays every chance he can get, and organizes musical activities with other classmates. His clarinet playing is on a high level, though he is mostly self-taught. He has the ability to figure things out on an instrument, such as fingerings, tone production and improvising, which shows real motivation, because he is doing it for himself, not because he was told to. He loves to improvise and play popular music by ear, and is beginning to learn jazz standards. At Litchfield he will be able to play with like-minded students and soak up the information the pros have to offer. Not only will he thrive in the social music camp environment, he will share his unique perspective as an urban, Latino youth.
