Johanny's Story

My passion is science.

I realized my passion for science once I started the 5th grade at The East Harlem School. When I was in elementary school, I always loved the feeling of curiosity that went along with each science class. Today, my favorite units are anatomy, chemistry, genetics, and biology. All four units have influenced the way I work and tackle problems. Anatomy has taught me that every part of the body is essential to the whole whereas chemistry, genetics, and biology have taught me that everything has a reaction and consequence.

Attending Georgetown Institutes: Forensic Science will help me develop my passion for anatomy and science in general. This program will teach me more about forensic scientists and what they go through on a day-to-day basis. I chose this program because I believe that it will help me to get a clearer picture of what I want to do once I enter college and begin to choose a career.

A Note from Ms. Ross, Johanny's Teacher

"Johanny has displayed passion, persistence and motivation as a student at The East Harlem School, both in and out of the classroom. On the lacrosse field, Johanny was always there to lend a helping hand or to lift spirits when her teammates would become discouraged. She never let these frustrations get to her, but worked even harder to improve her skills.

Johanny is also a hard working student. She is a great candidate for the Georgetown Institutes: Forensic Science program because she would greatly benefit from being around other students who share her interests. This program will allow Johanny to explore a field that she would not normally get the opportunity to learn about, all while further developing her passion."

My experience at Georgetown University

Thank you for giving me the chance to attend such a marvelous camp. At Georgetown, I met many students my age and older who shared a passion of learning about forensic science. Also, going to Georgetown was a unique experience because I was able to talk to and hear from a Forensic Biologist, a Forensic Paleontologist, a retired police man, and many others who have committed their lives to forensics and crime scene investigation. In this camp I also had a lot of fun. We were able to use microscopes in a lab to examine our hair, make footprint molds, and on the last day we all split up into groups where we then created the “perfect” crime. This project showed us that there is no such thing as the “perfect” crime. In creating the “perfect” crime, we had to think more like a forensic scientist and less like a criminal. This is because in order for the crime to be perfect we had to make sure that there were not any clues for the forensic scientists to analyze. During the week we were able to visit the crime and punishment museum. At this museum we were able to learn about all the notorious criminals. We also learned about different punishing methods that were used. My favorite part was when we did an activity where we were given three people that were suspected of committing a murder. In order to find out who it was we had to analyze fingerprints, find out what the murder weapon was (we did this by analyzing the blood spatter left at the crime scene), and we checked their alibi and looked for fibers on the victim’s body. In the end two of the suspects were charged for the murder. After this museum, we went to the spy museum to take part in an exhibition they had named “operation spy.” Operation spy is a simulation. It simulates what it is like to be on an actual mission. On the last day we all got certificates. Everyone was sad to go and no one wanted to leave. Thanks again for sending me on this amazing trip.

Cannot wait for Georgetown

I am so excited that this summer I will get the chance to attend Georgetown: Forensic science, an eight day program from July 19- July 26. In this program, I will get the chance to meet with forensic practitioners and learn about geographic profiling and medical examinations. I am looking forward to examining crime scenes and talking with detectives that have solved high-profile murder cases.

I chose this program because it includes things that I have never done before and it sounds interesting. Additionally, I will get to have a college experience by learning how it feels to live without my parents. I am also excited to meet new people and make new friends. Thanks to everyone that has donated money. Your choice to help me will change my whole life. Once again, thank you.
