Latisha's Story

Law is my passion because I have always wanted to be a lawyer since I was younger so I want to continue my dream. Law is a challenging, exciting, and rewarding career. I want to be able to make a change in this corrupt world even if it means starting small by helping people little by little through cases. Being a lawyer in general means: intense commitment, honesty to the amount of work you know you can accomplish, and knowing how to help someone within your limits of the law. I always wanted to know how my thoughts and evidence I found would affect other people and how it would be to actually participate in determining the verdict.

I want to attend this program because it will allow me to further my knowledge on the justice system and make a meaningful change in society. I always like to defend my argument and I won’t stop until I have been proven wrong to my satisfaction. This program will expose me to the legal fundamentals and skills of the law profession. I will be exposed to trips that deal with real-life experiences pertaining to law. Law and Litigation will prepare me to be an advisor for client negotiation as well as a problem-solving advocate.

A Note from Ms. Debbeler, Latisha's Teacher

Latisha is a brilliant, hard worker, and would be successful in any field. Latisha is extremely driven to go to law school, but needs to develop a more subtle understanding of what being a lawyer is really like, beyond Law and Order. Taking "Law and Litigation" at Emory will help her expand her understanding of different careers in law and prepare her for a major in pre-law.

Learning about Law at Emory!

My first day I settled in and met my roommate. After that I had orientation and we had a catered dinner. One thing that surprised me about the program was that students weren't allowed to leave campus alone.
I took the class "Law and Litigation" where I learned how to analyze cases. I also learned how to present my case to a judge and key terms that are commonly used in this field. The mock trial had a significant impact on me because it showed me what I need to work on if I want to pursue that career.  I would recommend this program to a friend because it was a good experience to get away from home and be able to meet new people, create new bonds, and get out of your comfort zone. Advice to future students attending this program would be to have good time management because the workload is not light. The first picture is the outside out the Re-Loom where We went to volunteer our time to help create products from different materials. The second photo is from our visit at The World Of Coca Cola. We got to taste 60 Different flavors and see different machinery that they use to make Coca Cola Products.

So excited to learn about law and criminal justice this summer!

I am most excited about learning more information pertaining to law and the justice system because I am very interested in studying criminal justice. The goals that I have set for myself are to stay focused on my work and be cautious of how I spend my free time and how much time I dedicate to studying. I am nervous about traveling to Georgia by myself and not having any other classmates coming along. A challenge I may face is meeting new people and learning how to get around the area on my own.I will overcome this challenge by introducing myself to others and interacting with others taking the same course that I am.

Thank you

Thank you so much for your generosity! I really appreciate your support and the amount of time you took out of your day to make sure that I have everything that I needed. Without your help I would not be able to have a chance to explore my passion for law at Emory College. Your donation will allow me to become more skilled at analyzing different cases and having new experiences. You have helped me out tremendously. Thank you.
