Catherine's Story

My passion is marine animals.

I discovered this passion by seeing a seal having a fishing line around its neck and I saw it was suffering. That's when I decided to help sea animals from any danger they were in. Yes, I may still be underage but that doesn't mean I can't start now on getting some knowledge about marine science. I still don't know what I want to do when I'm in college, I want to do something that involves sea animals and the ocean.

Attending Marine Science Institute Project Discovery will help me explore my passion more by introducing me to new ways to help the sea life. Also, I can figure out ways to help them from going extinct or help them from suffering because of the oils we drill from deep in the ocean. Marine Science Institute Project Discovery will allow me to go on field trips to see the different types of sea life.

A Note from Mr. Miluso, Catherine's Teacher

Catherine loves science. Although she has always enjoyed my history classes, she regularly talks about how much she loves her science classes. I know that this program could really impact the trajectory of Catherine's life. The a hands on study of marine life in our bay will allow her to deepen her love for the natural world, the sea in particular, a prerequisite for a career in the field of marine biology. The melding of her love of marine animals and science will give her a truly unforgettable and transformative experience. Catherine is such a wonderful young lady with a huge heart. The science field needs more people like her.

Best Week Ever

MSI Project Discovery was the best week ever for me! I got to explore the ocean and study the life that lives in the ocean, and I made new memories I won't forget. The first day, I was on a boat all day and we did three trawls where we dropped a net into the ocean and after a while we pulled it in. We caught some baby leopard sharks and two bat rays. Of course we let them go afterwards. We did a mud grab and then water testing.

The other four days we studied the ocean. On Wednesday, we went kayaking and that was my first time kayaking and it was incredible. On Thursday, we went tide pooling and that was awesome because I saw a kelp crab and she was a bit full, which probably meant she was going to have babies. Overall it was the best week and I couldn't have attended without all your support. So, thank you again for giving me the opportunity to attend the program and letting me have a hands on experience on a field i might want to study.

Thank You, Excited to Attend Marine Science Institute Project Discovery

I'm so excited to be attending Marine Science Institute Project Discovery. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be attending a marine science program. I'm excited to attend this program because I get to work with people my age and also get a hands-on experience with marine animals to see how they contribute to the ecosystem.

In my school I don't get taught how to care for animals and don't have any opportunity to work with animals, so being able to go to this program is something I will never forget. It'll teach me how to work with them and interact with them without causing them harm, and it'll expand my knowledge on what I already know. I just wanted to say thank you again for giving me the chance to attend the program! I'll keep in touch and update you after I complete it.
