Vanessa's Story

My passion is design.

Every year, as football season is coming to an end, Roosevelt plays their final game against their rival team at the annual East LA Classic. Before the big game, students dedicate two weeks in showing off their school spirit in the annual Hall Decorating Contest. This year, as Junior Class Vice President, I decided that I was going to be in charge of designing the hall. After a week of contemplating, we chose to go with a video game theme: The Junior Class Arcade. I loved designing the hall in a way that showed our class spirit, school spirit, and youth. Sadly, we placed second, but I was proud with our work and I didn't want to take it down. The next morning, I saw many people admiring the drawings and the paintings, and I felt pleased because I had designed something that everyone seemed to like.

The Summer of Art Program will help develop my passion through their Foundation Studio Drawing Course, which will help me draw better. In addition, I like designing an area that's given to me, which I'll get to explore through the Architecture/Landscape/Interiors course. Summer of Art will help me narrow my interests down in order to figure out which field I enjoy doing the most.

A Note from Ms. Ramirez, Vanessa's Mentor

"Vanessa displays a quiet strength. Her resilience and leadership are not loud or overpowering. She is hard-working and always humble. Vanessa deserves to participate in a great summer experience, especially one that would allow her to continue to develop her passion for design. Thus, when I nominated her for Wishbone, we talked about how attending Otis this summer was not just a chance to pursue her passions, but an opportunity to be on the campus of the college she hopes to attend. At the Summer of Art program, Vanessa will continue to grow in her independence and develop her confidence around taking positive risks to do the things she loves."

Experience at OTIS

This summer I attended Otis's Summer of Art college prepatory program. My schedule consisted of two classes: architecture/landscape/interiors and beginning drawing. The first week in my architecture class, we learned the basics of how to illustrate simple buildings in different ways in order to demonstrate specific details such as: walls, floors ceilings and bends in the walls. In addition to that, we learned how to draw the 3D figure for the simple buildings, also known as the axonometrics (See picture 1). From there on, we began creating our own building by using three of the simple buildings the professor provided for us. The second week, we focused on figuring out the shape of our building and designing/building its exteriors. The third week we focused on designing/ building its interiors, and the last week was focused on the landscape as well as creating the final drawings (See picture 2).

In my beginning drawing class, we learned the fundamentals of drawing still life with charcoal and oil pastels. The first two weeks of class we worked on the charcoal still life; my teacher taught us the different values that a single charcoal pencil could produce. The last two weeks of class we worked on our oil pastel still life as well as our final project. Ms. Jeanie Frias demonstrated the different ways a simple color like red could be produced by using different colors like orange, purple, blue, pink, etc. she also taught how we can use the different shades of blue to produce different values in multiple colors (See picture 3). For our final project, we had to choose an ordinary object and transform it into an inordinate object with meaning. I chose to draw a lightbulb running away from the cops. The lightbulb signified an idea that was running from society's ways. I appreciate every one of my donors for allowing me to have a summer filled with art and creative thinking at my dream college. I now have an understanding of what specific career I plan on pursuing in college. Thank you again for allowing me to have this experience.

Excited for Summer of Art

I chose to attend this program because, for starters, it takes place at my dream college. I never had a dream college until my English teacher showed me a poster of OTIS College of Art and Design, and I fell in love. Shortly after, I found my passion: design. I once had a teacher that told me these words: when you get a career, do something you love because you're going to be doing that for the rest of your life, and if it's your passion, it'll never feel like you're working. With that being said, art and design is something that I love and that I am passionate about, so I would like to explore my wide range of interest by taking three different courses at OTIS College's program: Summer of Art.

In my first course, 'Architecture/Landscape/Interior,' I will learn the skills needed to create my own vision of a design on a landscape. In my second course, 'Beginning Drawing,' I will draw images based on observation and my view on the way objects are shown. The final class I will be taking is an English Immersion class that will teach me the history of art and the different perspectives that it can be viewed from.
I look forward to the Architecture/Landscape/Interior course the most because it's a class that gives an insight to all three career paths that I was planning to take. I am excited, without even taking the class yet, because I can do a trial run of what I want to do for the rest of my life. This class will help me narrow down which path I want to take while fulfilling my passion for design.
