Celeste's Story

My passion is becoming a surgeon.

Being a surgeon became my passion when I was young. I wanted to be like my father, who was a doctor at the time. I also loved the idea of being able to save someone's life for a living. After coming to America, my father had to put his career on hold and take any job that he could get to take care of the family. Becoming a surgeon will give me the opportunity to not only heal people but to also use the money I make to participate in charities and help those in need.

Attending NSLC Medicine & Healthcare will introduce me to the life of a doctor so that I get a deeper understanding of what I plan on doing for the rest of my life. This program will also enhance my desire to be a surgeon, pushing me to work harder by giving me an idea of just how bad I want it.

A Note from Ms. Sabia, Celeste's Counselor

"Celeste is consistently self-motivated, helpful, studious, proactive and punctual. There's rarely been a moment where she wasn't greeting me with a smile and a hello and leaving class with the same cordial politeness. She's very detail oriented and has often gone above and beyond the assigned work in order to gain a deeper understanding. She's an overall fantastic student and young lady that I wish could replicate!"

Celeste is a perfect candidate for the NSLC Medicine & Healthcare program. She demands excellence of herself and has the patience and kindness to encourage and help her peers as well."

My Memorable Experince at NSLC HEAL

Going into the program, I was determined to be outgoing and have a memorable ten days, but once I stepped into the American University building, that determination turned into fear. However, being at that program means letting go of those fears whether or not you want to, and that is what happened. No matter what kind of person you were, you were bound to make friends because everyone there was so friendly. That's what happened to me. I made friends without even trying. In addition to making friends, I broke out of my shell. From the leadership sessions, I learned a lot about myself and that I am very capable of putting myself out there, which I did...by dancing in front of every single member of that program! It was a scary thing, but it was also amazing. I had so much fun meeting new people and doing new things, and of course I can't forget about the medicine. Where do I begin? I loved it! I got to go to a SiTel lab where I learned about certain aspects of emergency medicine (such as CPR), simulate a birth, and learned to suture. I also got to dissect a goat's heart and a cow's eye (which was actually my favorite part), as well diagnose patients (people PLAYING patients), and practice suturing on a pig's foot. I even watched an actual video of an open heart surgery, which was pretty cool. From the medicine, to the leadership and social sessions, NSLC Medicine and Healthcare (HEAL) provided me with an enriching and incredible ten days that, to me, was an unforgettable experience.

Ready for NSLC Medicine and Healthcare!!!

First off, I just want to say thank you to all the people who helped out in funding this program. I am very excited to attend the NSLC Program for Medicine and Healthcare program. I will be getting a glimpse of what it is like to practice in the field of medicine. This is a great opportunity for me because it will allow me to get a feeling for this field and help me to reinforce my passion for it. This is why I signed up for this program: to deepen my yearning to be able to help people for a living. It is basically like a sample life of a doctor (or a student in medical school), and I am very excited for the experience of being in a different environment than usual and meeting a diverse group of people. I am just so excited and can not wait for this brand new adventure that is to come.
