My passion is engineering.
Passion means a strong and barely controllable emotion. To be really truthful here I am not one of those teens who is a computer genius and can make anything they want, when they want by typing code into a black screen. My mentor, Ms. Patel asked me questions one day during school and asked me what I was passionate about or wanted to do. I told her I want to code. She gave me this website where it teaches you these basic coding languages which is really helpful to learn how this coding stuff works, but I want to have a full on connection with coding and try to experience it creatively with others.
During the first week of school, I had a conversation with Jose about his "hopes and dreams." He gave me a confused look, and asked for clarification. I asked him, "If you could learn anything, what would you learn?" His response surprised me. He immediately replied, "I would learn how to code." Jose has never had a formal, rigorous environment in which to learn how to code. Yet, he told me of how he had the opportunity to attend a short workshop about coding, and always wanted to learn more. After that day, we spent a few sessions after school looking for different ways he could learn how to code for free. Jose decided the General Assembly program, Dash, could be really fun. He actively talked to me about how much he enjoyed using the program and how he loved the idea of creating websites and other tools from scratch. I could tell Jose was really excited to learn how to code because he has been entirely self-directed in his learning process, and actively offers updates on how he is doing.
First of all, I am happy to let everyone who helped me get into this program a big thank you. This was an amazing experience for me to have during the summer and it was taken with this mindset of being able to create things on my own by the end of it and take the same ideas learned here at the program for future classes I take in college and career later. This program was also a time of realization, realization that it was time for me to get even more into engineering. Living in Silicon Valley, many other high school students are trying to keep up with the fast paced growth of technology and having all these other people to compete with, I think it's only fair to start a new path. Not in the Bay Area as a new software developer, or start up tech company engineer, but as the best Petroleum Engineer in the United States. I know it's a really big jump, but taking the same mindset, work method, hard work, and creativity I know it will be possible. Thank you so much for your support!
I am going to be participating in Blue Stamp Engineering this summer. I am extremely excited to start in the program already because it will let me have something really fun to do over the summer and something I never really got to do before. I can not emphasize the excitement I have to be part of this program. Due to my school being really small and not having a lot of opportunities for anything in engineering, I will make sure I make great use of this program. I can confidently say I can bring something to the table for the program and also receive information from the program and other students my age. Being accepted and attending this program will help me decide whether or not I would like to major in Engineering and Software Engineering.

Betsy, Mike, Michael, Emily, Abby and Tom say, "You go, Jose!!"
I am so proud of you Jose. This sounds like such a great opportunity.
Hi Jose - You might find some of the coursework tough at first, but you will be able to complete it successfully if you study hard, pay attention to the core concepts, and practice, practice, practice. You can do whatever you put your mind to!
Congratulations Jose on this wonderful opportunity! I wish you all the best and send you my love :) Can't wait to hear about what you learn from this program!
What a cool opportunity! You're so luck to have Ms. Patel supporting you! She is awesome!!
