Markalah's Story

My passion is basketball.

I've played basketball ever since I could remember, but it was just a sport to me. It was just a sport I would play every once in awhile, whenever I found time. I did not realize it was my passion until my eighth grade year. From 7th grade until the middle of my freshman year in high school I lived in a foster home with my younger sister. When I first went into this new foster home I was expecting for it to be temporary, which means I would only be staying for a few weeks. The weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years. As time went by I began to get depressed, and disappointed. Then, I would go out to recess and play basketball. It seemed like all my problems, and worries would go away. Still today, basketball is what would makes me happy, and makes me not care about anything else at the time but how to win! It brings energy, and joy into my life, and that's something I never stepped away from ever since then.

Attending Nike Basketball Camp at Berkeley will help me explore my passion, because at the camp I know basketball is what everyone is there for. The people that are there have the same passion as me, and can teach me something I don't know about basketball. I know, that everyone has their own reasons for being passionate for this sport, and that will be interesting to hear how it affects other peoples lives. At this camp, I know I will better my game, my team skills, and my knowledge on basketball.

A Note from Mr. Vasu-Devan, Markalah's Counselor

Markalah is one of the most dedicated, driven and kind young person I've ever come across. Markalah is singularly focused on achieving her dream of graduating from college and pursuing a career in sports broadcast journalism. Markalah and her siblings live with their single mother in east Oakland. Despite these tough circumstances, she commutes via bus and train more than 1.5 hours each way to KIPP King every single day. Markalah does not take her education for granted. She is easily one of the top few hardest working students I've ever come across. She perseveres even when facing adversity, both in the classroom, in life and on the basketball court. I have seen Markalah show the same tenacity in earning her spot on the girl's Varsity Basketball team as she does in the classroom. She loves basketball just as she loves to perform highly in the classroom. Markalah also works a part-time job at In N Out burger, which is another 1 hour bus and train ride from her house. She does this to help her family out, yet continues to practice hard on the court and grind hard in the classroom every day. Markalah is one of my heroes; I am driven every day by how driven she is to accomplish her goals for the future.
