Shimaa's Story

My passion is competition.

Since I was a young child, I was always competitive at everything I did. My father put me in gymnastics at the age of seven, and he encouraged me to put all my energy and competitiveness to good use. In the 9th grade, I severely injured my leg and no longer felt that gymnastics was a part of me. Instead, I began swimming. Even though I was slow and did not have as good of technique as the others, I made sure to never miss a day of practice and began swimming five days a week. I did not have much talent as I did with gymnastics, so I've had to work extra hard to get where I am today.

Swimming is a sport that consumes your thoughts every second of the day just so you can shave a millisecond off your time. Attending Alfred University summer swim camp will help me become the best competitive swimmer I can possibly be. This summer program will enhance my stroke development and improve my overall technique.

A Note from Mrs. Belghiti, Shimaa's Mentor

"Shimaa is a very passionate and motivated student. During the summer, she balanced herself between work and swimming. She was never late and always came to work with a positive attitude. Even during a tough day, she still persisted and kept a smile on her face."

Swim experience at Alfred

During my swim camp at Alfred University, I had a very tight but exciting schedule. I started off my day waking up at 5 am to take a shower and had to be down at the pool by 6:00 because early advanced practice began at 6:30. This lasted for about and hour and a half. Right after that I had morning practice, which consisted of a variation of dry land exercises that were necessary for strengthening and toning my entire body. Right after a three and a half hour morning practice we finally get some food in our system. Right after breakfast, we had practice for three hours, lunch, another three hour practice, and we finished of our training day with dinner. However, this was not the end of our day; I still had another four hours of recreation activities where we played capture the flag, basketball, and variety of team activities that gave me the chance to connect with others beyond the pool. We ended our day around 11 pm. After this long day it was easy for me to fall asleep.

Though my schedule was demanding, I enjoyed every part of it from early morning practice to late activities. My camp wasn't all fun: I pushed myself and tried to gain as much as I could from this camp. I attended the optional morning practice even though all my peers were enjoying an extra hour and a half of sleep. I swam every practice as if it were a race and increased my duration of swimming as well as decreased my time in the 50 free. I really enjoyed my time at Alfred and can't thank you for giving me the chance to experience this camp.

Exciting summer swim camp

I am super excited for this summer. I can not wait to plunge in the pool and go for a swim at Alfred University. This opportunity given to me will definitely be life changing and exhilarating. I signed up for Alfred University to become the best swimmer I can possibly become. The coaches at Alfred will definitely allow me to flourish by helping me with my strokes and providing me with correct technique. I am willing to learn and take whatever they have to offer. This opportunity is all thanks to your wonderful donations. I cant think of a way to thank you for the opportunity you have given me. I thank you for allowing me to reach my dreams.
