Natifah's Story

My passion is law.

At the age of fourteen my little brother was physically abused by our father, and I was a witness. Because I had called the police the day after the incident, I was asked to meet his lawyer and tell her what I saw. While walking into the office, I felt nervous, but the way she interacted with me and my brother put us at ease. She was kind and warm-hearted and made me feel welcome. She asked questions and clearly wanted to get to know us as people, not just as her clients. This made me feel that my voice as well as my brother’s would be heard. Ever since that moment in her office, I've felt that I could also be a lawyer. I love helping others, especially children. Being a lawyer means the world to me because I want to help those who need to be defended and heard.

I will develop my passion for being a lawyer by attending Summer Immersion at The George Washington University. At this program, I will take notes and analyze all aspects of law and life as a lawyer. This program is important to me because it will allow me to experience what I will face in two years: stepping into a college as a pre-law student. It will allow me to see firsthand what potential difficulties I might face by going down this path so that I can be better prepared for them.

A Note from Mrs. Perez-Mugg, Natifah's Teacher

"Natifah is a great candidate for Summer Immersion at The George Washington University because she is very passionate and willing to take on great challenges. I believe that this program will help Natifah see the moving parts that are required for successfully following her chosen path. Being able to see this bigger picture will bring greater clarity and drive to Natifah's day to day life. I believe that this program will be critical for Natifah because it will show her all of the essential steps required for following her passion towards her dream."
