Lyric's Story

My passion is cooking.

Cooking became my passion at a very young age thanks to both my grandmothers. When I was younger and living with my mom’s parents, my grandmother was always in the kitchen. I would always ask her if I could help her, and of course she would let me. She'd allow me to do little tasks, such as beat the eggs or mix whatever she needed to make. Over time, I began to develop a strong passion and love for cooking. Once I moved from North Carolina to New York, I began to cook a lot more with my grandmother from my dad’s side. At this age, I go to her house during the weekend, and she has me cook some of the recipes by myself, and they come out great. Because of this, I have developed a strong passion for cooking.

By attending Sur La Table Summer Cooking Series, my passion would develop greatly because this program would help me develop my cooking skills even more. I’ll be exposed to the real world of cooking, surrounded by actual chefs who cook (and bake) for a living. Being able to learn all new skills, such as creating tarts with delicious crusts and fillings, batch freezing custards for ice cream, decorating with piping and more would greatly expand my experience and help me become a better chef.

A Note from Mrs. Lehnert, Lyric's Teacher

"Lyric attends a very small school with limited resources. Her options for taking electives do not include cooking or baking classes, and even our Cooking Club is limited to making food that does not require an oven or stove top because those resources are not available to us. This hasn't deterred her from learning about her passion, however. Lyric has taken a lead role in her Cooking Club, she continues to learn new recipes from her family members and tries them out in her free time, and I have no doubt that Lyric will continue to seek out new opportunities when she goes to college. She is determined, rarely lets anything stand in her way of reaching her goals, and has a positive outlook that keeps her eye on the prize."
