Nourou's Story

My passions are Environment and Leadership

Attending the Trailblazers: Summer Sleepaway Camp will help me explore my passions. I will learn valuable knowledge about leadership and the environment that will help me in college and my future. I will gain a once in a lifetime opportunity of learning what I'm interested in. Gaining experience before going to college is a bonus and this program will give me that. I will have that extra boost of knowledge that will put me ahead of other students. Trailblazers: Summer Sleepaway Camp will be a great experience and it will help me explore my passions.

I was born and grew up in Niger, West Africa. Niger is a developing country. Niger’s poverty and corrupt government have made it a very hard place to live in. I moved to the South Bronx when I was seven years old. The South Bronx has 44% of the population living below the poverty line, the highest rates of illnesses, like asthma and AIDS and also one of the most polluted boroughs of New York. The opportunities in my community are scarce. This makes me more motivated to achieve my dreams. I am working hard at school so I can go to college. Attending college will give me many advantages and have a better chance of succeeding. I am using my community's harsh environment to motivate me to do better in life.

A Note from Mr. Gil, Nourou's Teacher

Nourou's is passionate about his interests. He'd be a great fit because he is open minded and will learn and happily teach others in the program through his wise and most appreciative perspective on life. Nourou has seen blight in Niger. He has the resiliency and strong academic habits of work and thought to be a great asset to the program. Nourou also has a great mentor, Mr. Sadibou Sylla who is attending Georgetown University getting an MA in sports management and international relations. Mr. Sylla has influenced Nourou as his math teacher and as a fellow African immigrant and soccer star they made a quick and solid bond. I admire both young men highly.
