My passion is pediatric medicine.
When I was younger I always wanted to be a doctor of some kind. Everything I do is to get to this goal: getting high grades, going to charter school, and having my universities already picked out. Becoming a successful pediatrician has become my main goal in life. My grandma Shirley and my aunt Jamila are my biggest motivators, and they give me inspiration and passion to work hard for what I want out of life. They also give me the courage to follow my dream.
Boston University Summer Preview will help me explore my passion by allowing me to have the opportunity to begin exploring my future field and what it entails. Discovering Biology will teach me more about the profession I want to go into, which in turn will help me when I'm actually taking the course in university. This program will give me a head start and further my education at the same time.
"Nicole is truly one of the most exceptional students I've ever had the pleasure of working with. She is intelligent, mature, and a natural-born leader who garners the respect of all of her peers.
Nicole has spoken with me frequently about her passion for medicine. She has dreamed of being a pediatrician since she was a small girl and, keeping this interest in mind, has worked actively to expand her knowledge of the STEM subjects in school. The BU Summer Preview program would be an incredible opportunity for Nicole to begin to explore this passion."
First, I'd like to say thank you to all my supporters. Thank you Wishbone, thank you to my wonderful advocate Mr. Sean Healey, and thank you to all my donors. Now, I'm sure everyone wants to hear about what all hard work went into: my week at Boston University. I absolutely loved it. The program was just amazing. I studied microbiology and got to work in a lab twice a day. I learned about cells and looked at them on a microscopic level, I stained the root tips of plants blue with special chemicals, I grew colonies of E. coli and made them glow a florescent green with genetic modification, I performed gel electrophoresis, and I explored the labs of real scientists - getting to see live sea urchins and their microscopic babies along with real cancer cells under a microscope. It wasn't all work and no play though, and my trip was anything but dull. Outside of class, I got to explore campus and see the sights of the city itself. I got CharlieTickets - the MetroCards of Boston - and rode the T - the train which runs both above ground like a trolley and underground like the subway- to many exciting places. I visited the New England Aquarium, explored Harvard Square, and visited Little Italy- also known as The North End, and the many shops and of course bookstores for an avid reader such as myself both on and off campus. I also enjoyed many new foods. I had my first canoli at the famous Mike's Pastries and my first Shirley Temple at a beautiful Italian restaurant, both of these at The North End. I also had my first crepe and indulged in cookie heaven at Insomnia Cookies, both on campus. The food and attractions weren't the only great things. One of the best parts of my week was being with all the great people I met. I made a lot of friends - something I didn't think would happen. These people were from very different backgrounds than mine whether that mean from other states or other continents! It was so much fun to meet them all. I really wish I could've stayed longer, but I can honestly say that I had the best week of my life at BU.
