Lesley's Story

My passion is becoming a pediatric nurse.

My passion is helping young kids of all ages to stay healthy as a pediatric nurse. I discovered this passion when I was 11 years old at my aunt's daycare. After school when I helped my aunt, I would notice that the kids would cough, sneeze, and get a fever. That would make me nervous about if they’re going to be ok due to serious sickness. When the parents brought medicine, I would give it to the children before they went home, and if the parents didn’t bring any medicine I would give them apple juice to make the sickness go away. I have been doing this for the past four years, and it made me realize that a child's health is more important than anything. Seeing them smile and have no illnesses makes me feel that I can have a career helping to heal sick children.

Attending The Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med, AP Biology program will help my passion to become a medical pediatric nurse because it would allow me to enter the medical field for the first time and gain hands on experience in emergency medical training. This main program will help me to explore my passion because it would allow me to take a step up from just helping in my aunt's daycare, to a more advanced hands-on experience that makes medicine more of an important value for the human body. Also, just like helping heal kids in the daycare, I would be able to gain firsthand experience of feeling the risk and pressure of saving someone. This program would also allow me to discuss experiences with my peers in the program and come up with solutions for how we can help the people we work with. It is important for me to have this opportunity because I don’t want to go out into the medical field feeling lost, nervous, and confused about what to do while at work. This program will benefit me in a large way in the future because I would be ready for my tasks and I would have plenty of hands on experience from the summer program.

A Note from Ms. Pierre, Lesley's Teacher

In our many conversations, Lesley has spoken about working in the medical field with passion. She loves working with kids and she always told me about the children in the day care with the colds and flu viruses etc. Naturally, Lesley is a caring person who stops what she is doing to assist anyone with a problem that they are having.

After Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med, AP Biology

I attended my summer program titled Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med last week as opportunity to take steps towards a career. This program was life changing because I was able to take an AP biology class that I never took before and able to learn things about life, humans, and animals and thendemonstrate what I learned in a lab experiment. My teacher Mr. Ben was really helpful and he was able to answer question I had. I was able to work with my classmates that I made friends in the lab. At events that they have after class I was able to leave my comfort zone and participate. Everyone there was very comforting and showed that it's ok to be yourself because everyone there was not perfect and has a different personality. I end up having lots of fun and I recommend everyone to do something like this that will help them in the future.

Thank you, Exicted for Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med, Ap Biology

In one more day I will be attending Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med, AP Biology Program. I am truly excited to learn so much about medicine and meet new people that I will be able to work with and take on challenges with. The classes and experiences that I will have at this program will help me obtain knowledge about science and medicine. It will also give me a chance to know with it is like to be part of the medical field as beginner. I thank all of the donors for letting me have this chance to experience something new and I will show that I had a reason to attend this program. Thank You!

Thank You, I'm Excited for Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med, AP Biology

I am going to attend the Centenary Summer Scholars: Pre-Med, Ap Biology this summer. I am excited to go to this program because I would love to know more about medical science. My science classes at school let us do science experiments and teach us about science, but I feel like they only focus on basic information and leave out basic medical research. I think this program would give me far more detail on medical science and would enable me to do a lot more experiments I never done that would be helpful in the future. I am looking forward to showing my thinking and being able to form a group and be able to show off our data bases. This program is helpful to me because every since I was young I have loved science. When I help take care of kids I get to deepen my ideas on medical science and learn more. I knowing attending this program would give my future career a head start so I can keep pushing towards it.
