Evelyn's Story

My passion is understanding the world around me.

When I was about eight years old, my third grade teacher took my class on a field trip to the Long Beach Aquarium introducing us to new species of animals, plants, and interesting information. This is what stimulated my interest in marine life and made me realize how much I really didn’t know about the world I live in and as I attended other adventurous field trips such as hiking at the Angeles National Forest, visiting the California Science Center, and various other sites that has opened up my curiosity to the natural world.

By attending SEACAMP, I would be able to explore my passion of being knowledgeable of the world around me to a greater extent. Marine life has always been a great interest of mine from the first time I was ever introduced to it, which is another one of the main reasons why this program stood out to me. Living in an urban community such as Boyle Heights has only allowed me to touch the surface of knowledge about my environment, and while reading books and articles of the subject is useful, by attending SEACAMP, I will then learn through a more hands on experience in exploring this subject thus gaining comprehensive knowledge towards marine life.

A Note from Mrs. Morris, Evelyn's Mentor

"Evelyn is a great candidate for SEACAMP I because she is committed to expanding her knowledge of marine life. She will serve as a great thought-partner to other scholars in the program and will be a leader among her peers. Giving Evelyn the opportunity to participate in this program will not only impact her life, but those around her as well. She is apart of a much larger group of scholars who are often afraid to take opportunities such as these. As a participate she will get to experience a new part of Southern California, meet scholars from other parts of the state, and further develop her knowledge and leadership skills."
