Nuh's Story

My passion is medicine.

This has become my passion based on a dream that I had when I was young. The dream was about my grandfather having surgery in order to give up his life so that someone else, younger than him, would be able to live. As time progressed, I came to the conclusion that the dream was telling me that my grandpa wanted me to help the poor and those in need just like he did. Through the years, my uncles, including my father, built a hospital named after my grandfather in Afghanistan, as that country is a war zone. That is the perfect opportunity for me to accomplish what my grandfather wanted me to do: help those in need in my grandfather's hospital.

By attending NSLC Medicine and Healthcare, I will be able to develop my passion by increasing the knowledge about medicine and healthcare. I will take an inside look at what it is like to be in the medical field while figuring out what I will need to do in order to prepare myself for my future.

A Note from Ms. Holguin, Nuh's Mentor

"Nuh has been a model member of my advisory and a highly motivated student. His passion for medicine and healthcare is very personal and deeply held. His idealism draws him to the work, and his motivation to help the poor and needy make him a valuable candidate for the NSLC Medicine & Healthcare program. He is steadfast and highly dedicated to any task that he tackles; this quality inspires those around him, raising the level of serious discourse in his academic classes and freshman advisory. He will benefit greatly from seeing the realities of what it means to practice medicine so that he enters the field with a realistic vision of practicing medicine."

NSLC Experience

Hello Wishbone Donors! First, I would like to thank you all for the great opportunity you have given me. Without you, donors, I would never have been able to learn the ins and outs of the medical field. The NSLC Medicine and Healthcare was a great opportunity to meet people who wish to be become doctors. I met many people, who I now constantly talk to on a day to day basis. During this program, we were able to do surgery simulations, learn about the different fields in medicine, make a PSA, talk with medical professionals, take leadership to a higher extent, and much more.

This program has really taught me what it takes to be in the medical field and what I can do to get into great medical schools. For example, they told us that medical school are looking for people who stand out and are not like the others, while also showing that they have a passion for medicine. I met a neurosurgeon who really inspired me to follow many of passions and dreams. This surgeon is also a police officer, survivalist, and a father. It really showed me that I could be more than one thing at life and I could make many of dreams come true, as time goes on. NSLC has opened my eyes to the field of medicine to a further extent and really made this summer great. From meeting great people, to meeting medical professionals, and much more, NSLC was truly an unforgettable experience and without you, donors, to help me, none of this would have ever happened. Thank You!

Excited for NSLC Medicine and Healthcare

School has ended just a couple of days ago and I am really eager to go to my summer program. This summer program will give me the experience of what it's like to live on a college campus and show me how it feels to be far away from home. I am pretty nervous because it will be the first time I will not be close to family for ten days. However, I will be with people in the medical field, so I will really get to learn my field further. I am pretty sure that many skills that I learned in high school will be useful in this program, like overcoming adversities. During my first year of high school, I there were many adversities that I have met upon arrival. I was getting a lot more homework then I was used to, the learning styles of my teachers, the environment that I was surrounded by, and many more. These adversities were overcome and brought out who I am and who I have the potential to be. The skills that I learned this year will help me persist to be a leader.
