My passion is helping others.
Helping others became my passion by having a big family. What I mean is that being the oldest in a big family with immigrant parents means that a lot of family members come to me for help, advice, and support. Volunteering has also impacted my passion for helping others. Knowing that I am able to make a change in someone's life makes my life more meaningful.
I will develop my passion by attending the National Teen Leadership Program because I will experience hands on activities that will allow me to collaborate with others. This program will expose me to new experiences and a different environment.
"Itzel's strong personality pushed her to naturally assume leadership positions. The National Teen Leadership Program, a place to harness and hone her assets, will drastically improve her abilities. Our community is small, and Itzel has become comfortable with her role on campus. Having the opportunity to collaborate with other strong leaders will be an invaluable challenge."
This was by far the most amazing, and inspirational weekend with NTLP at Sacramento State University! My weekend was filled with amazing workshops, and listening to the most inspirational, motivating speakers. Listening to these speakers really helped me realize that being aware of a problem isn't going to help; having the courage to make a difference is what makes us leaders. Taking that step to make a difference is what will empower our youth to make the changes we want to see because we are the next generation. We can make the difference, all we have to do is have the courage to make a stand. The workshops I experienced also showed me that I am not alone, there are many who experience the same things as I have regardless of sex, ethnicity, etc -- we all stood together and were not alone. I have learned to take the lead I need to make the changes I want to see, and be aware that I am not alone, and no one else should have to be alone. I plan to follow through with all the "life-lessons" I learned and be the difference my community needs. Aside from all that I met many new people, which really helped me come out of my comfort zone and have fun. Although we only had known each other for about 3 days it was still an incredible bond we had throughout the program, which I will never forget.
The program I chose to attend this summer was the National Teen Leadership Program. The reason I chose this program was because it is going to allow me to expand my leadership skills in an environment I am not used to. I will also be able to listen to two powerful motivational speakers and attend workshops with a variety of teen-related topics. Not only will I be able to expand my leadership, but I will be able to learn new perspectives of issues that surround me. What I think I am most excited about is being able to expand my perspectives and learn to have a leadership role with different people that I am not as comfortable with. I'm also excited about listening to empowering motivational speakers and just experiencing what it's like to be on a college campus.
