My passion is medicine.
Becoming a doctor has been my dream since I first found out my grandpa had cancer. Sadly, my grandpa passed away on January 27, 2015. This loss inspired me to become a doctor who specializes in cancer so that one day I can help find a cure for it.
I will develop my passion by attending Stanford Explore because I get to discover new things and build a strong mindset for achieving my goals. Stanford Explore will help me strengthen my true passion for medicine. I have never experienced anything like this program, and I am so excited to work hard at Stanford.

Because of this, she has easily earned the respect and admiration of her peers. In addition, Maryalexis has a quiet motivation and persistence that many students only develop when they are much older. She knows what she cares about -- visual arts, medicine -- and those interests drive her decisions on a daily basis.
Maryalexis is driven by her fierce motivation. However, as a school, we aren't able to provide her with the types of lectures and experiences that she will get in college. Stanford EXPLORE will give Maryalexis the opportunity to have these experiences as well as allowing her to spend time on a rigorous college campus. As a freshman with great grades, this program will spark Maryalexis's understanding of how much potential exists within the fields that she's passionate about."
Thank you for this experience at Stanford. I enjoyed this whole new experience of going to a University and studying about medicine. I felt so lucky to have people like you to help me go to Stanford Explore this summer! Doing this summer program made me want to do more summer programs throughout high school. I really appreciate all the help I got from you. Thank you so much!
This school year has been pretty difficult for me. In the beginning of the second semester, I found out my grandpa had passed away. My family and I left January 28, 2015 to Costa Rica for my grandpa's funeral. Fortunately, I was able to catch up with my classes but needed to work harder to complete missing homework and quizzes. I think this year has been quite challenging, but I also believe going to Stanford Explore will be one of the best things that is going to happen to me this summer. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Maryalexis, I'm touched that you're turning such a tragic event into something positive. My brother and I lost our father to cancer many years ago, and he too used it as a catalyst to pursue a career in medicine.
