Ashayah's Story

My passion is dancing.

This became my passion when I first started dancing in elementary school. I was first introduced to hip-hop when I was in the 5th grade. From then on, all I wanted to do was hip-hop. I started officially hip-hop dancing when I entered high school. Although my school doesn't focuses more on ballet, I still manage to perform hip-hop dancing at our shows.

SOCAPA Summer Dance Camp will develop my passion because I'll be exposed to new things, different styles of dance, and new feelings. When I dance, my confidence level rises. When I leave SOCAPA, I want to be the best at what I do.

A Note from Ms. Carter, Ashayah's Counselor

"In our performing arts high school, we offer study in the concentrations of dance, theater, and vocal arts. Ashayah is very talented and expresses an interest in dance. She would definitely benefit from being in an environment like SOCAPA where her peers are interested in the same things. I believe this program will push her to the next level. Being accepted will give her a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to experience dance in a different way. There is no doubt in my mind that she will perform well and exceed your expectations."

Fun at SOCAPA Summer Dance Camp

The program that I've attended was SOCAPA school of the arts. SOCAPA is a school that helps you build up your confidence and also helps you better your technique while dancing. SOCAPA has two genres -- hip hop and contemporary jazz -- but I focused on hip hop. Some lesson I've learned is that if you mess up don't beat yourself up, use that mistake as motivation. Before I went to this program, every time I messed up while performing it would always show on my face. Now that I feel better while performing, if I mess up I won't even show it or I'll just smile and play it off. I feel like I've gained so much confidence performing there because I had to perform in front of a lot of people who most weren't even from New York. Now that I feel better at performing I want to do it more often. Inspiring people who I met at SOCAPA were the hip hop teacher Ms. Maye. She was the one who told me to use a mistake as motivation to do better. Also, she told me that if I keep telling myself I can't do it, then I won't be able to do it. I'm gonna always keep those words in mind because it really helps me when I'm trying something new. I would recommend SOCAPA to anybody who is passionate about dance and who wants to have better confidence.

An open mind causes new experiences

The program that I chose is SOCAPA. I chose this program because I want to feel good in all genres of dance, and going to this program would be the first step into achieving my goals. I chose this program because it would be a new experience for me. I've never taken modern jazz before. I also want to go to this program because I want to get better in hip-hop. Hip-hop has been my passion since I started high school. What I look forward to going to this program is a good time. I feel like as long as I have a good time, then anything can happen. I'm really looking forward to experiencing something I never thought I would do.
