Tenisha's Story

My passion is writing and art.

Before, I couldn't find my ''thing" or what I was good at and it really frustrated me. But, I realized that I didn't have to be the best at my "thing" or better than anyone else. I had to try my best. I had to want and be excited to do it. When I do art pieces and writing pieces, I forget what time it is, and I enter a whole other world. I love it.

This program will help me advance in my passion in so many ways. It is also a wonderful program to be involved in during the summertime because I will have lots of free time while school is out. It will give me an opportunity to learn and showcase what I can do. People never fail to tell me, ''You're just a little Brooklyn girl with big dreams." However, I have a strong family that pushes me, always reminding me that I can achieve anything if I work hard and put my mind to it. And that's exactly what I intend to do.

A Note from Mrs. Topbas-Mejia, Tenisha's Mentor

Tenisha is a bright and creative young lady who has made a strong addition to our school community. From the moment she entered our school, Tenisha has shared that writing and art are her two passions in life. As a result, she has become a staff writer of our school's newspaper "The Legacy" and has published sports articles about our school's basketball team.

Tenisha has a strong desire to major in the arts in college and to study arts in high school. Unfortunately, our school's offerings in this area are currently limited. As a ninth grader, Tenisha is taking one of two arts classes we offer and according to her art teacher, she is thriving in the class. She has a good eye and the commitment to follow through with creating meaningful pieces in class. The training she will receive at this program will benefit her tremendously and help her dreams come true.

Writopia wrap up

Although I signed up for two weeks at Writopia and only completed one so far, I can honestly say that this whole process of being selected and chosen to participate, fundraising and preparing for Writopia was totally worth it. I got to meet new people and share new ideas, which helped me broaden what I know a huge amount. Thanks again to everyone who donated, and thank you Wishbone.

Thank You Wishbone!

Thank you so much to Wishbone and my donors. I cant wait to get to Writopia to learn and grow my writing skills, meet new friends and teachers, and excel in a field that I can use for the rest of my life.
