Riley's Story

I first discovered my passion for Medicine when I was very young. I had watched an episode of "Trauma in the ER," and was amazed by what the surgeons had done to save the lives from major trauma. Since then, I've been striving to be a trauma surgeon. It looked so astonishing to me, and I knew that that was what I wanted to do. Also, I wanted to be able to save others' lives from a life-threatening situation, which would possibly have a negative affect on their families if they did not save them.

Attending Centenary Summer Scholars will help me pursue my passion by helping me prepare for college and my future career. Beyond the college campus experience, I wish to go farther into my studies of becoming a trauma surgeon, including a view into what really happens behind closed operating room (OR) doors. Hopefully, I am accepted into the program where I can get to explore my passion in Medicine so that it will grow stronger.

A Note from Wendy Lou Duong, Riley's Teacher

Riley is more mature than a typical ninth grader. She would greatly benefit from being among such driven students with similar interests in the medical field. Centenary has some of the best teaching hospitals in the country which is one of the biggest appeals of attending the summer program at Centenary. There is a sense of forward thinking in every move she makes, because she takes charge of her learning. She utilizes down time to ask questions about college and demonstrates her maturity through her inquisitive nature. I know Riley would feel a renewed spirit if she were to participate in this summer program and return to school next year with a lifetime experience to share with other students in the medical careers class.

college camp

I went to centenary college for a week and in that week I had learned more from my teacher there than I had in my regular bio class last year. I had fun and enjoyed my time. I met amazing people that I hope to stay in touch with. The RA and the doors were clean and nice. I would do it aging if I had the chance!

Thank you

A huge thank you is given to you. I'm excited to attend a Pre-Med program because it helps me with reaching my dream of becoming a trauma surgeon. Right now, I am just getting everything ready for when I go, but I am also thinking to myself that it is unbelievable that I got this chance. I would have not reached it if you hadn't helped.
