Edwin's Story

I discovered my passion for engineering through Legos and my interest in technology. When I was younger, I loved legos and used to play with them all the time. I would follow the directions as indicated, but I also tried to make some other creations of my own. As I got older, I still liked Legos but I began to become more interested in other things like tablets and cellphones. When it came time to purchase a tablet, I did a ton of research finding what I wanted and the cost of it. This is where I did research on phones. I went on the websites for all the different phone carriers, watched YouTube videos, and read online reviews to find a phone. This research made me discover all of the different types of phones there are and what they can do. This inspired my love for technology and engineering.

I believe that attending Envision NYLF Engineering and Technology will help me pursue my passion of engineering by helping me learn more about engineering and teaching me new skills. One of the areas I have a desire to grow in, is coding. Through an enrichment program at my school, I've learned some of the basics of the coding language JavaScript. I've also learned some of the HTML coding language through videos. However, these have only touched on some of the skills in coding and I would love to learn more about the many coding languages and how they can be used in technology. I'm also hoping that Envision NYLF will help me learn more electronics and how to build circuits. Going to Envision NYLF will also allow me to see all the different types of engineering there is so I'll know which one I'll be in.

A Note from Mr. Santos, Edwin's Teacher

The only opportunity Edwin receives at our school to learn more about engineering is through our Programming Club, and his passion for it is just not met by those few opportunities. I think Edwin would benefit greatly from an opportunity to attend Envision NYLF Engineering and Technology, and to devote all his focus and energy towards engineering because it is obvious from the little time he spends on it during the week at school that he is really motivated to do well in that field. Edwin deserves a chance to pursue his passion unencumbered by the limitations of our school's resources.

Edwin takes full advantage of the opportunities he has to pursue engineering here at AFHHS, which is mainly through the "Programming" club that meets twice a week. Edwin works with great passion and enthusiasm on the projects assigned to him in "Programming", and it is clear that his time spent coding is some of his favorite time of the day. I think what makes me strongly recommend Edwin for this engineering program though goes beyond just his enthusiasm for programming - it is in his maturity and wisdom to recognize how doing well in his other classes allows him the opportunity to focus on programming. For many students at our school, the time set aside during the day for clubs is needed for extra tutoring or homework completion because scholars either fail to put in the work during class or at home. This is not a problem for Edwin, because he know he needs to take care of his priorities before he can enjoy his time in "Programming" club. Edwin is laser focused in class, always completes his homework on time, and is studious about staying on top of his schedule and workload, precisely so he does not have to worry about falling behind and being forced to possibly lose time in Programming to get caught up. I think this shows great maturity, and proves that he not only is ready for the opportunity to take more advanced classes in engineering, but that he has earned it too.

My time at Envision NYLF Engineering & Technology

I had an amazing time at Envision! I remember the very first project that we had to do was make a tower out of a bunch of paper and tape. It had to be at least 18" tall and hold up a gallon water. Even though my groups tower just barely held up the gallon, we shared a lot of laughs when making it. Along with meeting new people, I got to learn about the many factors that can go into solving a problem and more about how engineers have to think to solve those problems. Overall, I had a great time staying at Olin College and learning about engineering. I want to thank everyone again who supported me and allowed me to get to experience this program.

This is the water tower that my group made out of paper and tape.

This is my group and I programming an Arduino(a piece of computer hardware) so that when it's connected to a tool called eTape, which can measure water, it will show how much water is in the container.

This is me asking a question at a panel of people in different fields in engineering. I asked about what you could do to prepare for what you want to major in in college.
