Cindy's Story

My passions are history and storytelling.

I love to discover new things about historical events, and then use those facts and events when creating my own original pieces of writing. I enjoy sharing what I learned with everyone I know, and my stories allow me the chance to share how a group of people had to overcome an obstacle, or how one civilization paved the way for future generations.

Attending the Smith Pre-College Summer Program will help me to pursue my passion for writing and storytelling. I will improve my writing and my vocabulary, and will have the chance to take real college courses for the first time. As someone who learned English as their second language, this opportunity and experience will have a huge impact on my skills and better prepare me to be a better writer for college. This program will help me to express myself, become a better writer and will help me develop skills that I can use later on in life when I pursue becoming an educator myself.

A Note from Mrs. Munkwitz, Cindy's Teacher

Cindy is an outstanding student! I currently have the pleasure of working with Cindy in Geometry. Her passion for helping others and being the best student she can be is clear. Often in class, Cindy will volunteer to explain problems and help her classmates. Cindy is always prepared for class and excited to learn new concepts. If Cindy struggles with a particular concept, she will ask questions and seek help to overcome any difficulties. Cindy is a wonderful role model for all the students in the class. I know Cindy will take full advantage of all your program has to offer. Cindy is continuously looking for ways to improve herself and become a better student, and this program will do just that!

Creative Writing Summer

This summer I participated in the Creative writing workshops at Smith College and it was amazing. It was an amazing experience to be able to write outside of school and be able to share my work with other people and get feedback from them. Being able to read other's people work and give them feedback was amazing too. My instructors were excellent and they tried every day to make us feel comfortable sharing our work and ask questions when needed.

This was a new experience for me and my family because it was the first time I was staying overnight away from home but everything turned out to be great because I made a lot of friends that were experiencing the same as me and it helped a lot not to feel homesick. My roommate was awesome, we helped each other with homework, participated in activities almost every day around the house, we walked together to the dining hall and we had friends in common. This opportunity helped me a lot to go out of my comfortable zone to speak more English than I usually do. I was able to experience how college works and differentiate classes from college and high school. I loved this summer so much and I'm thankful that I attended to Smith. I'm thankful with all of my donors that donated money to my campaign and that they believed in me. There are not enough words to express how thankful I am and that you made this possible. Thank you for this awesome summer and for believing in me.

Creative Writing Summer

I am going to be participating in the Creative Writing Workshops at Smith Collage this summer. I am so excited because I will be able to experience creative reading and writing out side of school. I feel this is going to help with my second language that's English. I'm also excited because I know my parents, friends and my family are going to be so proud of me.

I am looking forward to working with people my age and and share our ideas about how much we love to write. I chose this program because I always loved the idea to be good at writing and create stories for other people to read. I think that this program is going help me with my future because I hope to major in creative writing in college.
