Diana's Story

My passion is medicine.

Medicine became my passion when I realized that it can cure interminable diseases and lead to a healthier lifestyle. I first dived deeper into medicine when my mother told me that one of her patients began to feel better after taking a few doses of medicine. After hearing this, I became so invested in the topic that I eventually decided that I wanted to make it a part of my career and try to help people who are sick.

My passion will increase drastically if I attend Summer Institutes at Saint Joseph's College because I will get a chance to meet other people who have the same interest that I do. I will also get to expand my mindset by learning from actual professionals who have studied health and medicine and know how it affects people.

A Note from Ms. Burnam, Diana's Teacher

"Summer Institutes at Saint Joseph's College is a strong match for Diana. She is a phenomenal student who not only works hard to achieve success herself but shows great kindness to others. A career in medicine would fulfill Diana's intellectual curiosities and her desire to help others. Attending this program would afford Diana the exposure she will need to learn more about the changing field of medicine and the different roles that she could partake in."

Exciting experience at St. Joseph's Institute

Recently I was honored with being allowed to attend a psychology class at St. Joseph's Institute for a week, and it was a new educational experience for my mindset. What I learned in this class made me see people with psychological issues in a different light and standpoint in society. For example, my class and I learned about how there are different types of schizophrenia and personality disorders that can be triggered from a young age. When I learned this topic in the class, I realized that there are different ways to identify these mental diseases in the mind and how people deal with having these mental illnesses impact their minds in society. Upon gathering this new information in this class, I learned that anyone can be affected by psychological issues at any point in their lives and not just from birth. Also I learned that due to social and cultural norm differences in the world, people react to physiological issues differently than other individuals do in other countries. This aspect will lead to many negative implications on the individual suffering from the physiological illness. The person that taught me this great lesson in my life was my psychology teacher, Ms. Scarlett, because she explained her experiences with meeting people who have suffered theses physiological issues and how it impacted her to make it a major of hers in college to study. All in all, I had a very fun and educational experience and hope that other young adults like myself can do the same with this program.

Getting Ready for St. Joseph Institute

Even though there were many other summer programs that I could have attended, I am so excited and glad that I am attending the psychology classes at St. Joseph Institute. I have always known that learning about the mind and the way the mind works has always been an interest of mine, and I know I can further it with these classes. The reason for this interest comes from my parents, especially my mother, who works in the medical field. She has told me that the mind is the one the most important aspects of the human body and that it is important to study the aspects of it. Through this one week program, I know that I won't be disappointed with the knowledge that I take away, and for that I am grateful.
