My passion is becoming a globalized citizen.
I discovered this passion my eighth grade year when I looking for high schools to attend. Unlike most of my peers, I wanted to go abroad and study and visit different places around the globe. I thought it could have been a phase, but as I continue to age I realized that it truly is a passion. I now go to school in a different town. I take a foreign language, Arabic, and plan on taking Chinese next year.
Attending the Duke University Summer Academy for High School Students will allow me to continue pursing my passion. I would have to travel to North Carolina, which would help me experience a different lifestyle. The program would introduce to me to a lot of new people and new cultures that I might not be exposed to here in Connecticut. The Summer Academy would also teach me more about different regions of the world which would contribute to exploring my passion and help me gain new experiences.
"Simply put, Gabriella cares about making a difference. She is just so incredibly selfless, which is exemplified by her usage of her spare time assisting those who need help. This is a young woman who is able to prioritize and focus on the goals that are important for her. She is an individual who only gives his best effort and never settles for less. She will be an extremely valuable member of any community she becomes a part of and is the epitome of a Wishbone student.
She will benefit from Duke University Summer Academy because she is hungry for an experience that requires her to travel; it is truly her passion. I can't count how many times she has shared this with me. She unfortunately hasn't had many opportunities to pursue this until now and will take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way."
I would first like to say thank you very much for sending me to Duke. It was an amazing experience. I took a course called "Global Giver" that has changed the way I see the world. I have learned more about not only myself but also the world around me. I worked with 13 different organizations daily, showing me ways to help my community. I met people from China, Michigan, and even Germany! I now have connections all over the world, and I was also able to learn about different customs. I have become so much more aware of the world around me rather than just my Bridgeport-Norwalk community. I am so grateful for all the support I received from my community, family and friends. I have become so much more aware and inquisitive about the world around me.
I only have a little over a month until I leave for North Carolina! I am so excited to begin my 3 week stay on the Duke campus! I can't wait to help other communities in NC and learn how to better my surrounding area as well. Not only will I be learning about how to become a better person but also how to be more independent. I will be fending for myself since I'll be pretty far away from my family but I can't wait! Thank you for helping me spend my summer at such an amazing campus and helping me learn more!
