Ahlenne's Story

My passion is medicine.

My passion for medicine was first ignited after the death of my cousin due to an inoperable brain tumor. I was only 10 years old and wildly perplexed by the fact that such a defect could eventually cause her to lose her life. Ever since then, I had become obsessed with medicine and what fields in this career entail. I had always had a passion for the sciences, but her death motivated me to understand what truly went wrong so that the end result was death and not a treatment towards health.

Attending this program would drive me to explore my passions with others equally passionate about their education and challenges. As a member of an underrepresented minority, I aspire to be an influential force for other female minorities fighting for positions in competitive STEM fields so one day, all people of varying backgrounds can have the same opportunities for careers in the STEM field. In addition to acquiring knowledge and experience, I will have exposure to a rigorous college environment.

My Amazing Summer

Greetings Funders,

I hope your summer went well!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend this program. I met people from all over the world like Saudi Arabia, France, Dubai, and more! I was immersed in an environment with people who have similar goals to mine which made me feel empowered. Being on a college campus for three weeks was an invaluable experience which prepared me for my future as a college student since I will be one next summer. I learned many things while at AIM about myself, how I learn and how I interact with others as well. At AIM, I was able to be independent and grow because of it.

Once again, thank you for funding my summer experience!

Best,
Ahlenne

P.S. I hope you enjoy the pictures!

This was the first time I ever held a human brain and spinal cord before. It was an amazing experience!

This picture was taken as the specimen was taken out of the bin it was in. It felt never ending because the spinal cord is quite long.

This was the first time I did a running suture. It was a fun experience.
