My passion is Exploring.
Exploration is the action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar place in order to learn about it through thorough analysis of a subject or theme. I am an individual who loves to travel to new places and experience new things along the way. I discovered the love and passion I have for exploring as a freshman in high school when I was asked "What do you love to do?" by one of my teachers. I simply revisited my early childhood years to realize: I was an Explorer--that was my "thing." For example, if I got the opportunity to travel to unfamiliar places, I could only imagine the new things I'd see or the new cultures I'd experience. But when I'm in class, a different type of exploration happens. It occurs when a topic intrigues me so much, I want to dive deeper into the content, even my teachers can't stop me. I'm only 15 and have only just begun to develop my thirst for knowledge--a passion that can take me anywhere I want to go.
Being able to attend Duke University Summer Academy for High School Students will help me delve into my passion of exploration because I will be able to travel to an unfamiliar place for what will be an unforgettable experience. Along with traveling to a new environment, I will be given the opportunity to meet the next generation of leaders from around the world. According to the overview, this program wants students to "immerse [themselves] in an international experience ...gain a global perspective on multiple areas of interest..." What better way to become a better leader, student, and individual than when I am surrounded by students my age who share the same and different passions as myself. Furthermore, during my time in this program, I will be given access to college classes in order to expand my interests in the world that I never knew I was interested about. This will help cultivate a future that I only used to imagine. With the help of this program, I will be able to know and understand what it feels like to be a college student--something that I cannot wait to become.
Nagama is one of our most zestful students at Uncommon Collegiate Charter High School. She is very passionate about her success and her education. She loves discussing what college life is like and the experiences that I have gone through in my own college career. This program at Duke would be the perfect opportunity for Nagama to truly delve into her passion to explore. Unfortunately, there aren't many opportunities for students at my school to attend programs such as Duke and have these life changing experiences. Too often do we find that kids only know the neighborhood they grew up in. A program like this is perfect for a student like Nagama who needs that exposure to develop new passions and meet more of her fellow peers.
Attending Duke University was a life-changing experience for me. I just want to take the time to thank my donors for allowing me to visit one of my dream colleges! During the three weeks at Duke, I was able to take courses (Global Leader), try new foods, and meet people from all around the world. I honestly felt like a changed person when i came back home. This was such an amazing experience that i will never forget. Once again I thank you guys for giving me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and attend this program.
