Makeeba's Story

My passion is leadership.

I discovered my passion for leadership through my previous internship at Service Learning in New York City. Last summer, I worked to help juvenile delinquents in Manhattan. We helped these young teens to reflect on their past actions through daily discussions of important issues facing today's youth. It felt empowering to take a leadership role at the organization and know that I assisted in improving the mental state of so many kids my own age. I want to learn more about leadership and how I can continue to help my peers.

A Note from Ms. Canaan, Makeeba's Teacher

Makeeba's leadership and kindness towards her fellow students can be witnessed on a daily basis at UCHS. Makeeba doesn't shy away from challenges. Instead of taking less rigorous courses, she chose to pursue the more difficult ones. She will bring her strong work ethic and maturity to the Frost Valley YMCA Service Trips program. I'm sure she will come back to school with many rewarding experiences from this opportunity that will help her expand on her current leadership skills that she can use in our school and beyond.
