Gissel's Story

My passion is social justice.
What is social justice? Social justice is the equality many hope for but cannot obtain. To this day, society says you're not judged by the color of your skin but the world demonstrates otherwise. Like Tim Cook said, "Part of social progress is understanding that a person is not defined only by one's sexuality, race, or gender." I have always strived for social justice no matter the issue, whether it’s about civil rights or deciding who has access to healthcare. I strongly believe everyone deserves to have a say and through social work we can advocate for those who have no voice. My past experiences reflect who I am today and I know one day I will help make a change.

Attending Duke Summer Academy for High School Students will help pursue my passion for Social Justice in more ways than one. Attending the Duke Summer Academy will allow me to interact with new people internationally. Moreover, It will help expand my knowledge on Social Justice worldwide. Thus, I will gain a better outlook. Not only will I learn about different cultures and equality internationally, but i will also have a chance to learn about the college life and be prepared of what I expect ahead of time. Being able to attend the Duke Summer Academy will allow me to study, perfect my passion, provide insights from various people, and help prepare me for college. Like Tim Cook once said, "Let your joy be in your journey -- not in some distant goal." And I believe attending Duke Summer Academy for High School Students will help me achieve that and more.
