Teara's Story

My passion is cooking.

My parents always cooked. When I saw how they cooked, I instantly wanted to be like them. When my brother moved to North Carolina, we constantly visited. My parents are Spanish, and they noticed there were no Dominican restaurants. We thought that the south needs a little Spanish touch, so we came up with an idea to open up a little Dominican restaurant. Sadly, because money is a bit tight, the idea remained a dream. I want to follow the dream my parents had of opening a restaurant and do what they could not. But, of course, I need to know the basics. I want to learn more and be able to do what my parents wanted to do.

A Note from Mr. Henderson, Teara's Teacher

Sur La Table Teen Cooking Program will benefit Teara hugely as she pursues her goals and dreams. The camp has resources and tools that Teara does not have access to. Exposure to new things will better prepare Teara for a career in culinary arts. I have no doubts that this program will boost Teara's confidence and her abilities as she focuses on culinary arts.

Great Learning Experience

My experience was very good, I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot of new skills and techniques and left with many new friends. This really opened my mind and showed me more ways and solutions to things even when they don't apply to my activity which was cooking. It was a great learning experience and I will definitely be doing it again.

Sur La Table

I'm going to be participating in the Sur La Table Teen Cooking program this summer. I'm excited to do this because it will teach me cooking skills and it would help me get closer to the dream I've had for a while. In school, we don't really learn valuable life skills like cooking, so I'd like to get a head start on living on my own in the future.

This program will also give me social skills because I will be working with people from different places and different schools so this will help me develop the social skills I need to get through certain things.
