Maggie's Story

My passion is rooted in the film and media industry.

Film and media are the two things that inevitably surround us. Left or right, there are a countless number of screens with motion pictures flashing at us at all times. Despite all the film I consumed, I noticed a lack of a positive representation for people like me, a person of color, on screen. We are often viewed as jokes, and a step stool to others. I started publicly speaking and sharing short films about the social injustice of today's society, as well as raising awareness. Film and media has given me a voice. I hope to continue to use that voice to create positive representation, on and off screen, for my community.

Attending the Envision NYLF Digital Media and Journalism program will help me pursue my passion for film and media because it will further my knowledge. Learning is a never-ending process, especially with the new age of technology. The privilege to receive an education through genuine, hands-on experiences will only increase my chances of being successful within this industry.

A Note from Ms. Lok-DeFino, Maggie's Teacher

I think Maggie is a fantastic candidate for this summer program. Her passion has always been the the film industry, and I believe she will be successful because she is a hard worker. She is a determined individual who will put all her efforts into working towards her goal and follow her passion. The program, and our future generations, will be better because of her hard work.

A Space Full of Like-Minded People

I recently returned from the National Youth Leadership Forum: Digital Media, Film and Journalism program. I am so overjoyed to say that this has been a life changing experience. I was able to meet and connect with other young adults around my age that share a similar passion and drive for this field. I met with so many people from all over the country. I was also coached by an amazing instructor. He was encouraging and motivating towards my team about turning projects in on certain deadlines. We had around four big projects to do in less than a week. This field is very fast paced. Having this experience, I was able to get a feel as to what I should expect in the future.

I'm lucky to say that I had the privilege to create a film, write a script, develop my cinematography skills, and editing skills all within three days at the New York Film Academy. I worked with four other young adults that I did not know, all from different regions of the country to create this project. The New York Film Academy instructed and guided us through the project. They gave us the opportunity to use their equipment and attain hands on experience. I am forever grateful for this.

Gathering all of this, I am proud to say that I am more than thankful for this opportunity. I'm grateful that I had the chance to connect with like-mindedness people all within a space, attain hands on experience, and develop my skills within filmmaking. I plan to continue to grow and improve on these attributes.

I am extremely grateful for Wishbone and everyone that has supported me. Without the help of you, I would not be able to sit here and write this. I would not have had this life-changing opportunity without you. I will be forever grateful for this. Thank you.
