Mamadou's Story

My passion is Basketball.

I discovered this passion when I was five years old.I lived in Europe where basketball was not a popular sport to play, but I needed to find something that would entertain me. Everyday I was coming home with nothing to do after I finished my homework. I would think to myself what should I do. I would love watching basketball on T.V. So I thought to myself why don't I play basketball because I learned so much about it. Everyday I came out of school I would of practice by myself. After that I fell in love with the game of basketball

If I attend Nike Basketball Camp - Overnight it will help me improve my skill set and mindset. It will also keep me focused on basketball and it will benefit me one day and open many doors. It will help me develop many things like being responsible, and knowing how to be respectful. This program will help me achieve my goal in life which is to go to a good college. If this program helps me, I can get scholarships to D1 schools and/or Ivy league schools. This program can brighten my future, and as I said open many doors.

The biggest obstacle in life I've overcome was living without my dad. Everyday coming home and not seeing my dad was very hard. Seeing most of my friends getting picked up by there dads. I had to be the man of the house and take care of the family. At the same time I had to do my homework and practice my basketball skills. But I overcame these problems by being focused on what I did all the time. Making sure I had everything done, but most of all I made sure that my grade and basketball was on the right level. I didn't let the fact that I didn't live with a father affect me. I will make sure it doesn't effect me ever.

A Note from Mr. Pakter, Mamadou's Teacher

Intercity schools have fewer resources for exploring a variety of passions. Mamadou has chosen the sport that is most structurally incorporated into his surroundings. It is obvious that he could develop skills in almost any sport. Since basketball is available, he's made the most of it. It's an opportunity for him to show off how amazingly dedicated he is to things he gets involved in and he does this in class, as a peer, with his family, and on the basketball court. As a freshman he has so much potential to grow and learn from organized institutions that are built to support students like him and Nike Basketball Camp is a great place for him to grow both socio-emotionally and physically.

Students from my school who get exposed to camps like these come away with a greater understanding of American culture and often praise and reference their experiences in class as being enlightening and helped them come to a better understanding of themselves. Mamadou's family is from Guinea in West Africa and he was born in the Netherlands. He lives in the South Bronx and is Muslim. Students like him have so much worldly experiences and have lived such rich lives but often don't get introduced to the larger, more "normative" American culture that he is more likely to experience in college.
