Asaada's Story

My passion is modeling.

I knew I developed a passion for modeling when I was younger and I watched Tyra Bank's "America's Next Top Model." To further my passion, I became a part of my school's "Fashion, Photography, and Modeling" club. In addition to joining the club, my passion developed when I began to follow plus size fashion bloggers such as Nadia Aboulhosn, Gabi Fresh, Essie Golden, and Anita Marshall. These women have inspired me to find my passion to become a plus size model. I want to show people that you can be big or small and still be beautiful, have confidence, and model!

FIT High School Summer Live will help me develop my passion by educating me about the fashion industry. Living in Newark my entire life, I've never really had the chance to develop my passion, and I think this program is the perfect opportunity to do so.

A Note from Ms. McNickle, Asaada's Teacher

"Asaada is one of the hardest working students I've ever taught. In seventh grade, she was in my classroom every morning before school and many afternoons in order to get the extra tutoring and support she needed. From speaking with her other teachers, she is a very strong student because she takes her academics very seriously.

Asaada is a good candidate for FIT High School Summer Live because it is her passion. At the end of every school year, students need to give a presentation to a panel of judges called their Final Performance Task. Asaada's was so good that we had her do it a second time so we could videotape it. I highly recommend her for FIT."

My Experience at The Fashion Insitute of Technology

I completed a Styling Course and Photography cousrse for begginers. In my styling course I learned what it means to be a stylist, meaning it's more than just picking outfits and peices for your client. It requires alot of research and you need to gather fabric swatches, paint swatches and pictures of the look youre going for. My FAVORITE class was the photography course becase that's something that I've been interested in for the longest. When I came into class I knew nothing about cameras and settings such as "aperture" and "shutter speed" but I learned that in the 3 week time frame. Also we took fun trips to The Highline, Chelsea galleries, and even Madison Sqaure Park. For this class we had to do a final project and I chose to shoot potriats of others in my family. I met my friends that I keep in touch with through this course. I'm so grateful that I had the oppertunity to complete this program! And I'm thankful that I was able to create memories and meet other talented individuals. I gained independence from this epxereince because i required me to commute their and back, which i learned on my own. Also it challenged me to be independent and make things happen on my own. I appreciate everyone who donated to my campingn and made this happen! Most importantly I thank my Advocate Ms. McNickle!

Excited for The Fashion Institute of Technology

I'm so excited to attend the FIT Summer Live program, where I will be participating in The Passion For Styling program. I'm excited because I have a interest in being a fashion stylist for plus sized women because I believe that plus sized women are not represented well in this area. I believe that I have the power to change this with the help of FIT. I think the Passion For Styling Program will teach me life skills and business skills that I need!
