Jarrell's Story

My passion is Cooking and Art.

Every since I was young, I used to enjoy drawing and creating things. I also loved food. I especially loved cakes and homemade food. As I grew older I started to watch a show called “Man vs Food” which is a showcase of specialty foods and how those types of foods are created. Most of the food showcased on the show is international which helps me get a better understanding of how other countries cook and prepare foods. Seeing all these types of foods made me want to try and create something like those and using some art skills, I could make it look interesting as well as edible. Also, when I was younger I helped make a coconut cakes which I enjoyed doing and learning. Although my knowledge on cooking is based mostly around what happens at home or what I gather from television, I can learn how to create more complex dishes at home for my family.

Attending Sur La Table Summer Cooking Series will help me explore my passion because it will allow me to be more creative in an interesting and new way. By joining this program, I will be able to further expand my creativity not by just drawing but also by cooking special meals. This program will greatly enhance my searing, roasting, baking and pastry-making skills as well as teach me how to cook international cuisines. These would not only help my skills in the kitchen, but overall teach me what cooking is like in other countries worldwide. I want this opportunity because it would be a nice experience to be able to learn an essential skill for life that would be beneficial to my survival and enjoyment. By learning how to cooking or bake special meals, I can make my time as well as other people’s time more enjoyable by giving them a taste of my different meals.

A Note from Mr. Kapfer, Jarrell's Teacher

Jarrell is a great candidate because I have watched him work hard and make major improvements throughout his middle school years. He is a student who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to pursue his interests, despite any challenges that may stand in his way, I truly believe that if given this opportunity, Jarrell will make the most of it, and it is quite possible that this program could be what sets Jarrell on the path to his future career, one with which he is truly passionate and dedicated.

Post-Attendance Update

My program was amazing and the overall highlight of my summer break. I can't thank Wishbone, my donors, or Mr. Kapfer enough for helping me to attend it! It gave me a chance to learn new skills and dishes that I can cook in my house and even out in the world after college.

My estactic thank you note!

I would like to thank Wishbone as well as all my supporters that helped me get into Wishbone. With one day before I attend my program, I'm very grateful to have this opportunity that will help influence my future college and professional careers. Hopefully, as I grow older, I will use the skills that Sur La Table will teach me and put it to good use by using my creativity to create new foods for others at home or worldwide to taste.
