Tajae's Story

My passion is learning.

Ever since I was young, I have been a tentative, yet curious and inquisitive, person. I was always sure that the best way to discover your strengths was to keep trying different things. My desire to explore new things heightened when I began attending San Francisco Waldorf High School. At my school, we had to take classes such as metal arts, basketry, weaving, book binding, and eurythmy. I happened to do an excellent job in these courses and could not have been more excited to learn a whole new range of skills. I want to continue to challenge myself, and I am excited that there is still so much out there for me to discover.

In addition to learning, I also have a passion for dentistry and psychology and would like to have a career in either of these fields. Attending NSLC Medicine & Healthcare will help me develop my passion by allowing me to learn about a variety of medical fields, build new science skills, and have more insight into what my future career will hold.

A Note from Ms. Kaslow, Tajae's Mentor

"I have seen Tajae display exemplary passion, persistence, and motivation, particularly with regard to succeeding in school so that she can pursue a career in the health sciences. Her interest in NSLC Medicine & Healthcare is an example of her persistence to gain the requisite experience to position herself on a health science path.

Tajae is a perfect candidate for NSLC Medicine & Healthcare because she is interested in a career in health sciences but could benefit from a broader understanding of the opportunities existing in this field. Additionally, Tajae will benefit from participating in a residential living environment as preparation for college. I can say, after working with her as a mentor in my own capacity, that she will avail herself of these opportunities and take full advantage of them."

What I've learned at NSLC Medicine & Healthcare

Thank you again to everyone who donated to my program. I had a great time at the Medicine and Healthcare Conference. I learned about different types of medical careers and the routes that interest me, such as Sports Medicine and Optometry. I also learned about public health and, along with my TA group, created an organization called The Pisces Project that was dedicated to help prevent the oral and hygiene infections of the homeless. At this conference, I attended lectures, leadership workshops, hospitals and labs, and even took a survivalist class. I had a great time here and hope everyone who's interested in medicine gets to do this program.

Excited for Medicine and Health Care Conference

First of all, I want to thank everyone who donated to my campaign. It means so much to me to be able to attend the National Student Leadership Conference, and I want everyone who donated to know how much I genuinely appreciate it. At the program, I will be able to see what it's like to be a doctor by doing clinical rounds and learning how to do suturing and surgical knot-tying. We will also visit different medical facilities and meet medical professionals. What I am most excited for, however, is the stimulation, where we will have to diagnose and treat patients and figure out the cause of a dangerous outbreak.

I love being a scientist, my passion is identifying important questions and finding answers - so rewarding! Like you, I didn't have any scientists in my family, and not many resources. In the 1960s i don't even think they had the word mentor. My inspiration was interacting with the MDs in the clinics I worked in after school in high school. I would have LOVED this program. Get the MOST out of every minute. Good Luck!
