Ammy's Story

My passion is computer programming and the development of robotics.

This became my passion because of a woman named Cynthia Breazeal who is a professor at MIT, my dream college. When I was in 6th grade, there was a book about robots, titled ROBO WORLD: THE STORY OF ROBOT DESIGNER CYNTHIA BREAZEAL. As I read the book, I decided that I wanted to follow into her foot steps by attending MIT and creating a robot even better than Kismet.

Attending NYIT Career Discovery in Technology & Engineering will develop my passion because it's an opportunity for me to achieve my dream. Attending NYIT, will allow me to learn and persevere. This would be a stepping stone that will help my passion develop.

A Note from Mr. Erickson, Ammy's Counselor

"Ammy is an academically motivated student. She is always seeking to get to the next level ahead of her graduating class. She insisted on taking college level courses before it was even offered to our students.

Ammy is aspiring to one day be a college bound student. I feel NYIT Career Discovery in Technology & Engineering will give her the necessary drive and encouragement to fulfill her goals."

Life at Campus

NYIT Summer Pre-College Experience was full of new experiences, I was able to interact with people who are currently working in the many fields of engineering, mathematics and computer science. The program increased my enthusiasm for science and engineering as the profession that I want.

We had many lectures from experts in areas such as computer science, coding, programming, and hacking; these were successful speakers who narrated the many professions we can choose under mathematics, science and engineering.

My first class was Robotics, I was able to code and get hands on experience. Like everything in life, I encountered some difficulties since we had to start from scratch and we needed to understand its train of thought. I really enjoyed the challenge. Game Design was my second class, the concept of game design was to first think about what you want the game to be. Second, I needed to get a character who will be the hero. Music was the third class; it had to do a lot about sound, mostly waves. I am now able to understand the different waves, differentiate each sound, and associate it with a specific wave. I am also able to change the sound with a synthesizer and understand the many ways that can be changed.

There were two inspiring people who had left a deep impression on me. First it was Brad Antoniewicz; he was a hacker who worked at Intel security and explained the rules to become a hacker: 1. One don’t hack anything without getting permission and 2. Don’t be a jerk. Another person was Raj Goel, he was a public speaker of IT and currently he works at brainlink. Raj talked to us about public speaking. To me, public speaking is frightening, I start to tremble and feel like the words can’t come out. So, when Raj first told me to stand up in front of the class, I felt terrible, like I wanted to faint. Then, I started asking questions and realized that the class was feeling the same as me and that we had more things in common than I had imagined.

I really enjoyed that I met new friends and I was able to learn and have fun. I do not regret getting up early in the morning but welcomed the day and the new opportunities that it brings.

Excited for NYIT!

With great enthusiasm, I am happy to announce that I have been accepted to Technology and Engineering Experience program at NYIT Manhattan Campus. Now, this passion of mine can be fulfilled with this lifetime opportunity. I've always felt a great fascination with computer programming and the development of robotics. Therefore, I consider NYIT the best choice to satisfy my drive and increase my encouragement to fulfill my goals.

I'm most excited about this program is that I will be able to communicate with students of my age about the same passion for math and science as I do. I will be able to share ideas, and brainstorm of how to improve processes in the areas of technology, computer science and engineering. It will be fun to encounter new people and professionals in the fields I love the most. It will also be a great opportunity to work hands-on projects, work hard, and earn credit for my creativity. There are many ways to improve the world and its by interaction and collaboration among many fields of science talking to each other. That is why it is important to explore the many forms of computer technology and engineering to make a difference in society.
