My passion is creating.
As a child, I always saw my sister draw things like Japanese manga and other amazing pieces of art. I was very impressionable and I learned that I myself wanted to be able to create things others can enjoy. I like being able to create drawings, sculptures, paintings and mixed media in order to convey the experiences I have had, as well as others’ experiences. I have come to realize that art is my passion because it has so many different ways to interpret it, I can see when I need to improve, and I like when I leave others speechless or confused by doing something unexpected.
Last year, I decided to take an Art 2 class. I was the only junior in the newly introduced class and I felt a little overwhelmed with the amount of talent my older peers had. Feeling out of place made me want to work harder at developing my artistic skills by learning new techniques in order to stay at their level and be acknowledged. Attending Academy of Art Summer would enable me to learn new mediums and push the limit to what the definition of art can be.
"With access to experts in the field and a community of artist peers, Mayra's skills and identity as an artist will flourish. She is a keen observer and a diligent worker. She applies her learning with attention to detail and a great deal of reflection. In the Academy of Art's Pre-College Art Experience, Mayra will learn techniques and approaches that she is not yet familiar with, and I know she will soak them up and integrate them into her work. I see Mayra's sense of self most strongly in her art; by developing that passion further, I would imagine Mayra's confidence spreading to other aspects of her identity."
First of all, I'd like to re-express my gratitude towards my generous donors for enabling me to complete the program: thank you!
This summer I spent hours in class learning about shading and composition within the class the Academy of Art had and focusing on making things appear as realistic as I could. I've attached two photos from before and after of a sphere we had to draw with charcoal. Looking back from the beginning stage to the almost final stage, I see how much growth I've had as an artist (though now I see where I could improve more!). I've also attached my favorite drawing, a cow made of plaster, and I've taken the liberty of naming her Lynn. The class was led by a professional in the field who was incredibly helpful, and I was surrounded by many others who had similar passions. I feel really lucky to have been a part of this community.
Attending the program has solidified my choice to head into the Art field, but also expanded it into other areas such as animation and drawing. My life has changed as a result of being given the opportunity to participate in the Academy of Art Summer Pre-College Art Experience.
This summer I'm going to be attending the Academy of Art Summer Pre-College Art Experience and I couldn't be happier that I am able to explore my passions further. I will always be eternally grateful that this opportunity did not pass me by, so thank you to everyone who helped spread the word, donated, and to everyone else who was involved!
Over the course of this program, I'll be taking two classes, drawing and photography, which will be amazing because I hope to learn a lot about what I'm actually going to be studying and majoring in when I go to a university in the fall! I'm looking forward to the summer of my dreams in order to expand my artistic experiences this summer.
Good luck, Mayra! Have a great time this summer and never give up on your passion! :)
